Open Source

The good thing of Open Source is that it enables custom versions.
So, a spyware free version of LimeWire is now in this world. It is a good thing and a sad thing. Good as it shows that it IS open source. Sad as it distracts from what is essentially a good thing.

I need a tool like LimeWire, I have a non controversial use for it. I think we can find some money to have something like a peer server. There is however no way in which I can get the community that I do this work for to adopt LimeWire with Spyware AND even with a ripped version I will not get the necessary adoption.

In one of the posts I read that you (LimeWire) would sue the Spy ware company if the software was spyware. I do not understand. Isn't it spyware ? If you want to send adds, use your own channell to send the stuff. Send the same ads for all and, I know it is not spyware. Spyware starts with personal targeted ads. It is personal because they know who I am and, I never told them.

So please make it possible to use your product..

Thanks,
Gerard Meijssen

And for the spyware?

Does it make the program run even after removing spyware?

there is CLEAN LIME WIRE without a crack

There is the so called clean limewire group that takes the open source and removes the ads. It has it's own installer without spyware.
Unfortunately their website has been down for a while. I have put up a mirror of the only version I have of it. click on the WWW button below.
It is the version 2.2 and you need a JRE installed to run it.

new clean limewire

found teh new clean limewire at www.freewirep2p.com

aqualime is sweet too, but hard to install

MamiyaOtaru March 28th, 2002 08:10 PM

What is hard about unzipping a .zip file? ;)

I will be looking at getting an easier version out for those not familiar with java.

shorebreak March 29th, 2002 02:31 AM

I don't think that this is clean limewire.
It is just a fork of the limewire open source project. They say they would develop it based on the limewire source - I wonder if they just take the limewire releases and put their red pepper in it or if they actually seperate the development from limewire or if they contribute to the open source limewire....
questions over questions...

Regarding freewire:
from Adam Fisk of LimeWire LLC in an email to me:
Quote:

"We got a little upset with the FreeWire folks mostly because it appeared that they were just trying to make money off of our work without really contributing anything, which is the kind of thing that keeps other companies from opening their source code (hurting everyone in the long run).* Now, though, it sounds like they will be making some additions of their own."
So, they might be doing something usefull with it. Sounds fishy though.
And my version is just for the hell of it. btw, I've got 2.3.2 converted. But not hosted. I need webspace (who doesn't)

Your AquaLime really kicks it!

It looks superb and the best: I have a modem connection and it gives me 10 connections by default :o)

I like the new limewire look better than the old one.
I'll put it on my webpage for clean limewire clients.... :o)
What's different in 2.3.2?

Hi people!! Great job on the ad free version. When you think about it, free is not really free if it contains spyware or ads. We all end up paying for that in the end. I just downloaded the source and JDK along with Ant. Being unfamiliar with Java, I can't seem to get the thing to compile or anything. I get errors like "out of environment space" and "bad command or filename" sometimes. The readme makes it sound easy, and I'm sure it is if you already know how to compile Java apps, but since I don't, I could use some help. I will make the results available to all when I get it done, and I plan on adding some nice features too! I will probably join the LimeWire dev project after I get going, but I feel I would not be able to contribute anything yet.

I think that Limewire's interface is far too laggy.
Difficult to explain, but laggy is just the right word for it.
All the menus and buttons feel strange and laggy.
Freewire feels much better without that 'lag'.

Carlo April 5th, 2002 12:32 AM

I think this is because you, like me, have a not very fast computer. Limewire became far more heavy than before, so the response on old computers can give that "lag" feel.

sipher April 7th, 2002 12:26 PM

The new 2.3.3 version is ALOT nicer than the previous version. Yes still laggy even on a p2 450 (that's sad What happened to optimizing your code?) but it's not quite a bad as the last one. The program is alot nicer htough, easier to use and stuff. Are there any clean versions based on 2.3.3 floating around?

click the WWW button below my post.

Currently I mirror AquaLime and todays sourcecode build.
