Can't do windows updates........... Hi again, smee again :p I have been trying to do some "windows updates" and they download, but then they won't install, because it says I don't have a "genuine" version of Win XP, which could very well be right ;) Is there anything I can do? as don't they say that your PC is more vulnerable without the updates? thanks a lot, Neddy |
Nedswife You have got to be the biggest (and latest) of the jokers to hit this forum. If you have a "hooky" copy of windows XP then for goodness sake get a legitamate copy asap because MS could get FAST (Federation Against Copyright Theft) to pay you a visit. Now that you have tried to update your XP MS now has your IP address in their computers and can trace you via your ISP. I know of a similar character who borrowed an already registered copy of a MS product and tried to re-register it online, FAST paid him a visit and seized his computer. Now that Vista is on the verge or being released copies of XP (even ex-student copies) are now very cheap. So get yourself a cheap legitamate copy of XP asap. UK Bob |
not real windows xp Do you realize how many false hits they get with thier junk authentication program? If they sent people out to every house that failed that program they would have a massive law suite on their hands. And i wouldnt hold my breath on windows vista. |
Just get a legit copy ASAP - follow Microsoft's instructions when it says you don't have a genuine copy, and it will give you a link to register for a genuine copy. Without it, you can't get critical security updates or service packs. |
I have a genuine copy of Windows XP and I still can't update. It keeps saying prcess failed when it gets checked ??? Don't really care for many of the updates though. I can do without ;) Most of them just manage to f*** up something I'm running |
If you use firefox, use this instead - http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ |
Dog Meat (I still love that name) You may be right when you say that MS will probably not send out people to raid you but why take the chance when you know they have your IP address, especially as they have raided people with hooky MS products before. The simplest thing to do is take Nobie's advice and get that MS authenticated copy of XP or find a store willing to sell a cheap, cheerful and legitamate copy, any other course of action is just asking for trouble. I'm using IE It has something to do with some programs installed on my PC Not malware ;) or if it is, I still want it |
Thanks to all who took the time to answer my questions, much appreciated. I used to have a "hooky" version of the previous program, and it did updates fine. So I didn't understand why it wouldn't update. UKBOBBOY, if FAST prob ISN'T going to pay me a visit, would that mean that I am not, in actual fact the BIGGEST AND LATEST Joker on the forum? PPL like me come to these forums because we DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, and sometimes we are a bit embarassed about the simple questions we ask, without ppl like you making making us feel worse. YOU were a beginner once too! A simple reply to my question would have been adequate, without the insult. If you can't say something nice about somebody, don't say anything at all. Thanks, Neddy |

try disabling your firewall and starting up the windoze firewall and see what happens...I've had this happen twice (errmmm...at least on two installs repeatedly) and this worked for me..of course since I couldn't find the root of the problem the real solution was to reformat and reinstall XP... |

the problem is this...to answer your query accurately we would have to break some laws...there is a way to 'defeat' this, but...rulez are rulez.. yur better off with a legit copy of XP from the tone I get from your posts, as you don't have to go around constantly 'hacking' your OS to get it to update...just get a real copy (and if you bought this box with a pirated OS, then MS will most likely give you a discount on a real license) and go on with life.... |
same problem U GOT!!!!!!! i bought a computer. and guess what?same thing comes up THIS IS NOT A GENUINE COPY OF WINDOWS XP!!!!therefore it will not let me do any new up dates .so until i get a genuine copy of xp i cannot get any new updates. and the guy that i bought computer from will not even answer my call or answer the door! even though i was promised it was windows xp.looks like i'll just have to go pay 100$ for a original copy of xp. they say its all i can do.its still a bummer!! good luck LORI:mad: |
Got Any Tips IF YOU FIND OUT ANY WAY TO SOLVE PROBLEM WITH THE "NOT GENUINE" PLEASE LET ME KNOW .LIKE IF YOU FIND SOME WAY TO GET THROUGH THIS WITHOUT DISHING OUT FOR A NEW COPY,PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I'M SURE EVEN THOUGH I GOT SCAMED I WONT PROBABLY GET A DISCOUNT. BUT IF ANYONE HAS HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WHAT CAN WE DO? TO ME ITS JUST NOT FAIR. BUT,IS ANYTHING ANY MORE? DISCUSTED NO ONE (alot of NO ONES I KNOW)CANT B TRUSTED!!!!!!!! LORI AGAIN HELP ...DO U AGREE? lorisue1970@msn.com::mad: |
Windows Genuine "Dis" Advantage SPYWARE We could argue all day about whether Mr Gates and his greedy monopoly has the right to invade our computers. There are lots of opinions, mine is ***** Microsoft if they feel it's ok to play a dirty game then it's OK for us to get at them any way we can. Go to http://windizupdate.com/ for all your windows updates without fear of Microsoft planting any spyware into your system. You can't use Internet Explorer for the plug-in you must use Nestcape or FireFox. I accidentally picked up the WGA file and simply did a re-install then found one of the many non-Microsoft Service Pack 2 downloads. It's a huge download, around 200mb but worth the hassle if ServicePack2 is compatible with your system (a lot have trouble with it, I haven't). I believe most of the problems with SP2 occur if you have other applications running while attempting the download. I can't remember where I downloaded it but there are many legal non-microsoft sources just surf around you'll find it. There are a few ways of avoiding or removing the WGA spyware without doing a re-install, I just found it easier to do the latter. |
