PeerGaurdian,HTTP block or not ? Hi People What is the benifit of this HTTP block in PeerGaurdian, when should I have it on or off. If its on I cant get to the Forums, so what els dose it stop that I may need. [Confused I Am] 2 B or not 2 B ?. Cheers |
I'm no expert but you only need to run pg while your using LW, otherwise you can shut it down. The pg site recommends that you block http and allow exceptions for trusted sites. But that can be a pita. I usually block http and I have allowed exceptions for the couple sites I visit most, but if I'm surfing the net I allow http to make things easier. |
Unlike 6 Pac, I only use PG2 when I am using LW and then I have http blocked. There is no point in using PG2 when you are not using LW or any other P2P app simply because your other protective software, e.g. firewall, anti-spyware, etc. is enough protection for day to day use. UK Bob |
please excuse me U2 Im not very com savi, but if information is gatherd from some cookie type gadjet, wont it just send the info when you turn the http block off after PG and LW are not in use? |
Well mickjapa108 That is why tou have anti-spyware apps such as Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and MS Anti-Spyware to get rid of those spying cookies. UK Bob |
Hi UK Bob, If your running LW and using the internet at the same time, then it would be a good idea to run pg while your surfing. Then you'd either have to allow certain sites or allow http. i don't do a lot of d/ling so it doesn't slow me down that much:). Hi mickjapa108, If pg blocks a site and you want to allow it, just click on the pg icon in the system tray and it'll open up and the blocked ip will be hi-lited. Then right click on it and you'll have the option to allow it for 15 mins, 1 hour, or permanetly. If your not sure just allow it for 15 mins and see if it lets you into the site. |
Hi 6_Pac I understand your point of web surfing, using LW and PG2 all at the same time but I can't help but feel that this may undermine the very reason for having PG2. Let me explain, if you ever looked at a PG2 log you will see there’s a huge number of government agencies, computer companies, local and city authorities (domestic and foreign) trying to gain access to your PC because you use LW. Now, this is where it gets technical (and I am on dodgy ground here) using your browser and leaving http:// unblocked leaves port 80 open and subject to attack. My paranoid point is that LW, when in use, invites attention from government and computer agencies from all over the world, leaving a port open when your PC is being bombarded and scanned could be, on your part, asking for unwanted trouble. So, for my own peace of mind, I do not surf and use LW at the same time. (Ever Paranoid) UK Bob PS. Once, when PG2’s online block list was down, I found a keylogger planted on my PC. At a guess, I would say one of those unscrupulous agencies planted it. |
UK Bob Sorry my friend your links are not working, [Check]Tryed other links in other posts & they work ok, so I dont think its me. Tell me if im wrong but I cannot clear all cookies from my Com cos, I have links to my friends n sites all over the world and its not realistic to write them all down, so many thousands. The intruders can make coppies or lookalikes at least of almost any cookie, even Symantec. It seems to me it would be simpler to password protect the log files of Lw, VLC ect.. to maintain our right to privacy or is that to complicated. Rather than strugling with our finger in the dyke, ware a wetsuit. As I say computers are a mystery to me But protecting your com only part of the time with Pg seems nieve or what am I missing, as the Webroot, spyware programs dont pick up the same as PG. Or why would we be using PG in the first place. Mock me if you like, Teach me if you like. Your humble student or Clown U choose. Later friend |
Pac Thanks for that bit of info my friend Im new to PG and greatful of any tips n help I can get. Like you I dont D/L much so my risk of Virus is less. I dont surf the market place so I gather less leaches, or unwanted cookies, but I belive pasionatly In our right to open file sharing so if you can help this fool to carry on doing so, God bless you for it, Thanks Pac for not talking down to me. Ps what about this password protect Log files idea [Silly ?] |
Uk Bob, Thanks Bob I now see your point. While using LW last night I had to allow several different ip's for a site to load. The ip's were for advertising sites like fastclick and some others and when I scanned my pc later, it showed that cookies had been placed on my pc by these same sites. So it would appear that the way I was doing it was not the best way. mickjapa108, To help block cookies you can try setting the privacy level higher in internet options, from the control panel in windows. Go to Start>Control Panel>Security Center>Internet Options, then click on the Privacy tab. You may need to experiment a little with it. Some sites might not load if they can't set cookies. I'm not sure about the password protect idea. You can set your browser to allow cookies from certain sites and block cookies from others. That link in Bob's posts are for his signature. It's not related to his posts. He did have a picture on there. Maybe it became corrupted or something. |
