codecs for avi file

i recently downloaded a video file that my wmp10 cant play because it says the file lacks codecs.what is this, and how can i add codecs? thanks

Avi's normally need either a DivX or XivD codec. You can get the DivX codec free here. Download the Xivd codec here.
