Please help.. burning .avi files

I did a search on this, and it did return some advice that I followed, and still I'm having trouble.

The advice was to use Super Converter which I dowloaded. I am getting error messages every time when I try to convert. The error messages are not giving me specific reasons, rather several possible scenarios. It's saying I don't have enough disc space, which I have a ton, or the file is incomplete, it's also saying to uncheck Use Direct Show, then when I do that it says to check Direct Show. I'm sure I have all the codecs.

What I was doing before was using Windows Movie Maker to covert the format and then using Sonic to burn the dvd. The end result is very poor quality with the audio not matching the video.

The files I'm starting with are perfect dvd rips.

What is the best method for doing all this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

I've found Nero7 to work for all files that I've desired to burn to a DVD...as long as the file is not so big as it requires compression to fit on a single DVD, things turn out just marvelous

michvolley November 12th, 2006 08:37 AM

So you don't have to convert from avi format to burn from Nero?

Peerless November 12th, 2006 08:48 AM

Nero does the conversion internally...simple as pie actually, which is why I've been using it...I find it such a PITA to have to do the conversion, then creation of VOB files, then burning...Nero7 has made it soooooooo simple...well worth the i.nvestment, just wait until its on super sale for under $50 US...

My computer came with Sonic DVD Plus, so I use that. Works well. Check if yours came with something

michvolley November 13th, 2006 07:03 AM

Okay, just a bit more confusion.

I have Nero 7 now. I've used it to burn avi movies to DVD's three times.
One time the video worked in my DVD player and it looked excellent. The other two times, I got an error message on my DVD player saying that this disc might not have a playback option.

I did all three exactly the same way, and they were all avi files.

Now I'm gonna pull my hair out!!

I had very similar problems when I started out... I use Nero 6 and I was having playback problems (such as it jumping all over the place, read errors,etc)... the best solution I found wasn't with my software but with my DVD player.
If you can, the best ********** you can make is to get a DVD player with DivX and MPeg4 features. I got a recordable one for £100 which was pretty good considering it plays absolutely everything I chuck at it. I was advised this by someone on here a while ago, and its really paid off.
If you check the playback of your burned DVD's on your computer and they play fine but not in your stand alone DVD player, then maybe you should consider this option... its well worth it.

rach28 November 13th, 2006 08:41 AM

Also, if you get one with DivX on it you don't even have to bother transcoding your DVD's... you can just burn your DVD's as a Data disc which takes a couple of minutes, and they play great and you can fit loads on one disc.

michvolley November 13th, 2006 08:44 AM

:( Thanks everyone. My dvd player is new but not an expensive one.

Should I try to reformat all the avi files into something else just to be safe? And should I use Super to do that?

rach28 November 13th, 2006 08:49 AM

You can use SUPER to do that... it is supposed to be the best solution for many users, although I haven't tried it myself.
But i've been told off another member to bear in mind that you will still have to run it through Nero again, which will transcode it again... it is time consuming but apparantly its supposed to work.

michvolley November 13th, 2006 09:17 AM

I'm gonna try to put it in vob DVD compliant with super and then put it in Nero..

I've been trying to get all this straight for a week and I had NO idea how hard this would be at first, lol.

Thank you!

rach28 November 13th, 2006 09:19 AM

Let me know how you get on... have fun;)

michvolley November 13th, 2006 12:37 PM

So far I haven't been able to do anything with Super. I'm getting error messages that indicate any number of things going wrong and I've addressed as many as possible.

I just don't know why the one DVD I made on Nero worked and the other 2 didn't. That's why I'm confused.. I did all three the same way.

rach28 November 13th, 2006 01:09 PM

Well at least you gave it a go... maybe someone who knows a bit more about using SUPER could help you out with that. I did intend on trying SUPER myself when i was having problems, but after reading through the info I decided it was a bit complicated (despite it saying it was easy!) and also i don't have much free space on my hard drive.
Maybe member "wondering why" could help you as they advised me about using SUPER.
As for playback... I found that on my old DVD player it was very hit and miss... one minute it would play a disc, next time it wouldn't... sometimes it would jump all over the place, sometimes it wouldn't even play dvd's that it had played before!
If its not your DVD player then maybe its something to do with the quality (bitrate) of your file originally, or what quality (bitrate) its been burned at.
I had the most trouble with films that needed to be compressed to fit on a disc as the quality (bitrate) was much lower. All my compressed DVD's played terribly on my old dvd player, yet the non compressed ones were fine.
It may be that your DVD player likes the higher bitrate discs???
Also, without getting too bogged down in other possibilities... it may be worth considering that it may be your actual DVD writer thats causing the problem. The one I got in my PC originally was OK for a while then it started burning me bad DVD's- firmware updates didn't work, so I got another and that was fine. That's just another possibility... but don't worry about that if it burns OK on Nero's Copy DVD function.
For me, the problem was my DVD player... for you I can't be sure. If someone who uses SUPER can help you to use it, and they play ok... great. If they still don't playback, consider your DVD writer or DVD player next.
Sorry I couldn't help you more... i'm not as up on this stuff as some of the others!

SOMEONE ADVISE MICHVOLLEY ON USING SUPER...:super:

michvolley November 13th, 2006 01:16 PM

You know what, the two that didn't play did have to be compressed to fit on the disc. So I will pursue that as the possible problem.

Thank you! You have been a huge help!!!

When I tried SUPER I got errors as well. After a bit of troubleshooting I found out that there was no folder specified to save to. Could be your problem as well. Right-click on the screen in SUPER to bring up the options.

Also could be due to incompatibility like PAL vs. NTSC. There is a difference in framerate there which causes some players to have read errors.

michvolley November 14th, 2006 04:47 PM

So I'm making sure they're NTSC and I'm using Nero 7 to do everything. Rather than compressing the files to fit the disc, I'm splitting the longer movies into 2 discs and it's working great now!!

Thanks you guys rock!!! :yahoo:

Peerless November 14th, 2006 04:48 PM

you can also change from PAL to NTSC with nero7...I do it all the time, and have had no problems

chris12 November 14th, 2006 06:02 PM

try using WINAVI. i use it all the time to convert AVI files to DVD and i can then burn them on a DVD disk using Nero

michvolley November 15th, 2006 01:29 PM

More help please!! with Nero 7

I've burned a few DVD's now no problem.

All of a sudden I'm having a problem with one movie.

I'm doing this:

Make your own DVD-video
Add Video Files (it's an .avi)
Then I hit next until I get to the screen with the burn button, and when I hit it I get this message:

Unable to prepare data for recording:Prepare session failed:Transcoding of video failed.

I never got it before and I'm doing the same thing. WTF????

Sleepless November 15th, 2006 04:16 PM

Just a guess but probably a codec issue. Been having a few of those myself, not errors, but picture and sound going out of sync.

Are you using the newest version? (Nero7 Reloaded)

michvolley November 15th, 2006 06:22 PM

Hmm, okay thanks. I have Nero 7 do I just have to update?

It's wierd because I can play it in Nero, so doesn't that mean I have the right codecs?

I hate being so clueless!!

If you can play it no problem, then you have the codec. Then something else is wrong. Space could be an issue. Also be sure that you have no other programs running at the same time.

Try using burn-at-once in Nero. Updates have been terrible from their side lately, so I advice that you wait until the final version is released

michvolley November 16th, 2006 05:59 AM

Thank you!:) :) :) :) :)

Hello! In Nero7, what option do you choose when burning your DVDs from Nero Express? I want to play them back in a regular DVD Player. I did this once and have never gotten it to work again...! I am working with a DVD + R & I thought there would be 4600 MB of space which is what it says. But then it keeps telling me it's too big when I try to burn as a My Video CD. I think I mut be doing something totally wrong/ Thanks for any help!!!

Sleepless November 17th, 2006 04:22 PM

Try NeroVision and choose make DVD. Then just add the files you want converted and burned. Nero Express only burns the file as is.

BTW a DVD+R disk will not fit more than 4.389 GB when burning DVDstructure
