aol firewall help

ok so i've been reading a lot of threads and i'm confused. i'm using lw pro and i have 8 meg broadband from aol. i have a firewall and i think its slowing my upload and download speeds dramatically. while downloading 5 files, all avi and all around 550mb my speed is sometimes up to 200kbps in total but its usually around 40kbps and quite often 0kbps. each file is downloading from 6 or more hosts. how do i fix this? i've tried the instructions set out at the port forwarding site but aol don't support static ip and i have no idea how to allow lw access to the netgear router. help meee

Firstly do you see a firewall in front of the globe in LW ??:rolleyes_2:

90% of the time yes but the odd occasion it goes my download speed increases. it also seems to drop if i minimise lw. the second i open it back up it gets slightly faster

oh and my windows firewall is off and my mcafee one allows access so i'm guessing its the routers firewall i'm seeing?

wondering why November 25th, 2006 01:43 PM

Yep it would be, what make and model is it...:rolleyes_2:

ordy November 25th, 2006 01:49 PM

Follow this guide to Port Forward your modem/router...

do i need a static ip for it? cause i tried creating one but aol don't support them.

ordy November 25th, 2006 01:58 PM

oh and thanks for ya help so far

wondering why November 25th, 2006 01:59 PM

Yes you do, just try going through the steps and see what happens...I know when I Port Forwarded, the static IP part was nothing like the instructions so I left it as is entered the one I had and I got it to work...

Just go with it and see what happens....:rolleyes_2:

ordy November 25th, 2006 02:01 PM

i'll give it a go. oh could i just use the standard ip that everybody seems to have? or am i now talking a load of rubbish?

wondering why November 25th, 2006 02:04 PM

I would just recommend following the instructions, as you have to go deep into the computer for this information...:rolleyes_2:

Make sure you let us know how you get on...

ordy November 25th, 2006 02:23 PM

ok will do. if this goes horribly wrong i'll cry. playing around with my router settings aint gonna ***** it up is it?

wondering why November 25th, 2006 02:25 PM

No it wont stuff it up lol, as long as you stick with the manual you will be fine...:rolleyes_2:

ordy November 25th, 2006 02:35 PM

ok the whole layout is totally differant from what it says. seeing as i'm a total novice i'm thinking i should try and put it all back to how it was?

wondering why November 25th, 2006 02:37 PM

Do you mean the static IP layout ???

ordy November 25th, 2006 02:41 PM

no the layout for setting up the router. its telling me i should see screens that aint there and telling me to click things that aint there. i'm doing what it says to the letter up till this point

wondering why November 25th, 2006 02:45 PM

Hmmm very strange, but I have seen this before with a friends Dlink modem/router, we ended up just leaving it and her firewall still comes and goes as it pleases...I have not seen a solution for this as yet...So you may have to leave it as is, unless another member has some advice on it...
I will ask around and see if anyone has any insight....:rolleyes_2:

Sorry...

ordy November 25th, 2006 03:13 PM

well that was fun. lost my connection and my pc crashed wahey. its all back to how it was now i think. those sites are probably best off actually supplying the correct info or they're likely to get a bad name

ordy November 25th, 2006 03:15 PM

well thanks for ya help anyway. shame it didn't work but i'll live lol

wondering why November 25th, 2006 03:18 PM

Don't give up just yet, I have put the word out, let's see what happens...:rolleyes_2:

ordy November 25th, 2006 03:21 PM

haha to late. after what just happened think i'll just let it be. thought my pc was totally ruined for a minute

ordy November 25th, 2006 03:23 PM

haha i'm currently downloading at 0kbps wahey lol
