problem with video/spliced wrong?

Sorry I'm new to this forum but I've been using Limewire (and something similar, but forgot the name) for years. I am fine to download and play music.

I am new to downloading video content. My problem is this: the first video I have partially downloaded, when I preview it, it is like the scenes are spliced wrong. Instead of seeing one screen for a few seconds and then the next page, it is like the two or three pages flicker alternatively. The soundtrack is good though. I am using Limewire Pro, Windows XP, and the file is .avi and is playing in Realplayer.

Do you think it is just trouble with this particular file or is it a common bug? I am having issues of course with finding real videos on Limewire so I can't even test out a different file. No, I did the Toy Soliders.avi as recommended here previously and it works ok.

TIA :aweof:

thanks OAH. the video i named i got from here, the site says it is not copyrighted! which was why i ran it as a test.

i have tried a third video and it is all pixelated and greyed over the colour. occasionally the colour shows through. does this tie in with what you said about correct codecs?

i found the link, it was to magnetmix.com itself:

magnetmix video

"Toy Soldiers"
In 1969 a boy realizes that his actions at home can protect the life of his father, who is fighting in Vietnam.

Directed by Kyle Cassidy and starring Christian Xavier Heim
Genre: Short Film
Format: Windows Media Player AVI

Sorry if I got the idea wrong, I really thought it was not subject to copyright. It is only 3 minutes or so or might be a trailer - I haven't watched all of it.

Glad I got it right. There is another film and a song with the same name. Of course I wanted to get it right on this forum.

Anyway I already have DivX player but it is not my favourite interface. I will look at VLC now.

Thank you for the tip.

I'm in Oz. I made sure to read the rules before posting, and the links to most frequently posted questions. I hate text language too. In some states here they are making it 'legal/allowed' for Year 12 students to submit their exams written in text-speak. I would hate to be their examiner! It gives me a headache.

The Toy Soldiers link is a good idea for users (new and old he he) to check if (1) Limewire is working for .avi and (2) their video player is working.

I've downloaded VLC player and made it the default application.

Now I can't do preview in LW at all!

I can only preview by going into Windows Explorer and finding my Incomplete folder and double-clicking the .avi there - it won't work within LW:confused:

Anyway, thank you OAH. Realplayer was the problem. That file works nicely in VLC player.

back again. i just read Birdy's post about VLC player and the new Limewire version that allows us to use VLC to preview files, and now see you have posted too. My current limewire is version 4.12.6

Using Realplayer as the default, and previewing files in it, would not work because most of the files i've tried to preview either haven't opened at all, or their appearance is messed up. therefore i would cancel the download, thinking the file was bad. this is not the case, as the same files play well in VLC. i am just going to have to try limewire 4.13 sometime after i've finished with my current downloads.

Is six hours for two x 700MB files normal? My ADSL is not particularly slow nor fast. Limewire site says the longer you are online the faster/better your downloads should get. The 'speed' on limewire ranges from 17-30 kb/s when the adsl usually allows downloads from the internet at 50 kb/s.

hope to see you around too, and thanks for making me welcome and for your help.

I was downloading two video files at once, each varied from 17-30 kbps.

When one download was finished, the remaining file still did not increase speed (I thought speed would double, duh).

I have now changed Speed to T1 and in the Downloads option I am on 'unlimited' speed for download (i.e. the button is all the way to the right).

Um, the changes resulted in a file download speed of 1-2 kbps.

I've reverted to the earlier options and am now going at 11 kbps (but had to wait in line for my position).

Hi again

I was away for a week with no computer access. Urgh!

Back again and the LW download speed sometimes picks up.

With regard to my ISP it is unlimited downloads and they don't taper the bandwidth down after x GB like many ISPs do (they give you a choice of lower bandwith or pay $ per MB over your limit).

My ISP has no peak or off-peak times so the time of day shouldn't matter - unless of course not many LW users are online when I am downloading.

I have encountered a new problem but I'll post that in a separate thread.

Thank you

Cat.
