All the songs I downloaded turned into Zip Folders! WHY?! And how to I fix it?! I recently downloaded LimeWire 4.12 and downloaded several songs. The next day I turned on my computer and got on Limewire, all my songs suddenly turned into Zip Folders. I tried extracting the file from one, to see what it would do, and then it said file was corrupt. I was just listening to them the day before with no problem! So what went wrong? I can't even listen to them, or download any other songs without them turning into a zip folder the next day. Please, someone help me to find out what's wrong and how to fix it!! THANKS!!! |
You have a virus.... To get expert help with this go to one of these sites, the guys there are good and will tell you exactly how to get rid of it... http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=79038 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ |
Not to sound like a "know it all" or anything, but I know it's not a virus. My fiance is a computer networking technician, and we have the best security on our computers. And I have no viruses on my computer currently. And anytime that my computer shows signs of lagging, I have him fix it. So there's got to be something else. |
Ok...Try the search function on the top right and have a look at how many people are experiencing the same problem...This is a new virus and I really recommend that you go to one of those sites and post a Highjack this log.. It can't hurt and who knows you may be able to prove me wrong...:rolleyes_2: |
what antivirus do you use? FYI, Norton antivirus is the best |
Norton is crap...How many AV's have you tried ??? |
I use Norton Systematic Corporate Edition. I'll check it out and get back with yall. But is there any other recommendations if this doesn't work? Thanks yall. |
Not yet...As this is only new, we haven't got a sure fix but to send you to experts...:) |
exact same thing my songs just did that within the past 15 minutes.my computer was being really slow and so i restarted it and when i turned it back on they were all compressed zip folders and it kept saying my files were corrupted:confused: |
This ones pretty bad....Again the best I can advise you is to go to one of those sites I have supplied and post a Highjack this log... Please let us know how you go so we can advise others as well...:rolleyes_2: |
Well, we found out for sure that it's not a Virus! And after waiting 5 hours for the virus scan and spyware to get done, I went to bed for the night, and started my computer, and the songs that I downloaded last night, turned into Zip files again! I think I might have to just say screw limewire and find a new download program. But I don't know! |
Just because your AV didn't detect it doesn't mean you aren't infected... These people that create these viruses are very clever and AV's are not infallible... Could you just humour me and do a self check, if you feel you don't want to go to one of those sites to get diagnosed... Create your log and check it here... http://www.castlecops.com/HijackThis.html If your fiance is a computer networking technician what does he think could cause an mp3 to turn into a zip file ??? Also what other file extensions have you downloaded in the past?? or have you only ever downloaded mp3s....Also have you ever downloaded that "urgent limewire update" ...... |
Like I said before, I am a new LimeWire user. My fiance' hasn't taken a look at it yet. He just ran the AV and Spyware. But I will try and have him take a look at it tonight. But more than likely he won't. Today hasn't been a good day for us. We had to take our boxer to the vet. He's in critical condition. We won't find out till afternoon tomorrow what's wrong with him. So I won't getting back to you for a little while. But I will give it a shot, what you suggested. Thanks again. |
Sorry to hear about your boxer.... Take as much time as you need, I'll still be here when you are ready...:) |
Man, as wondering Why said, Norton is a FULL PIECE OF SOFTWARE **** that is useless, try switching to free and reliable products like mine (AVG A-V, Windows Defender and Comodo Firewall), believe me, if someone asks me dor an advice on what sec. products to use, i will definitively tell them to use those apps. (Not so much RAM comsuption, and inmediat detection of viruses, malwares, and/or app leaks). And for the problem you have, i think it must be something tracking your downloads based upon any Java leak, try uninstalling Java AND Lw, then scan your system for viruses and malware, and reinstall them both, (i recomend you upgrade your Java version to 1.06), and see what you can catch. |
Drk-Guy How do you come up with a Java leak. From what has been posted in the forums peoples files are being changed from one format (Mp3 to another EXE). Perhaps you would like to explain how a java leak can change a files format ?????:bangh: I would like to know from some of the people this has happened to is if after the file format has been changed are all of the files the same size if so whats the file size (807kb) I believe (but could be wrong here) that a new variant of or a new virus is on the Gnutella net that once downloaded and opened searches the save and possibly the share folder and takes the names of the files it finds makes a copy of itself then uses the name it found and deletes the original file. Thus enabling it's ability to spread itself. |
There are several Java leaks that have been corrected in the new 1.06 version... Man, since i've installed Java 1.06 i feel that my sytem is too much more speedy, and guess what, Lw loads up really faster than ever, and when i scanned for viruses, the AVG A-v came up with 3 new viruses, inmediatly when i updated Java, believe me that 1.06 version is faster and safer BTW: To avoid those little things, try to use Shareaza, it is not based on Java, so, if there's a virus/leak on your Java installation, you can look at it there. |
Virus I just downloaded the new beta today and when i downloaded a new song it turned into a zip file when i restarted my computer. And even worse is that all my songs in my folder turned into the zip file. I tried to do a system restore but it didnt work. I dont know what to do because I just lost 200 songs!!!! Does anyone know how to fix this? |
It's a nasty virus that's around at the moment, take a look at this current thread and follow the advise that has been given....Your best bet is to download AVG as it seems its the only AV at this time that catches this virus... The link for the download is also in this thread....:rolleyes_2: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=67262 |
Success!! AVG worked perfectly!!!:xirokrotima: I downloaded it and scanned my comp and no more virus! Just to test it I downloaded a song from limewire and restarted my comp. and it didnt change into a zip file!!!:PEACE: Thanks for the advice! |
Thanks for letting us know |
See what i told ya... Avg is great, doesn't waste so much resources, and is a FREEBIE, but if you want more integrated protection, you can buy it, still... consider a Java upgrade |
Considering the java leak thing... I know Java is open source, so, being a SO popular technology, virus coders could code a virus upon Java plattform that camouflages in the main files of Lw, or embedd itself on javaws.exe, the file that makes all the magic work, have'nt you think about that? |
I have norton's antivirus and my files are still zipping!!!What is up with that? |
Disable Norton all together and download AVG it's free and then run a scan... As far as I know AVG is the only AV that picks this virus up.... Then you can uninstall AVG and enable Norton again....Just don't run 2 AV's at the same time... |
