Cannot use Gnutella safely - EVER!!! I had heard of Gnutella & Limewire, but was using bittorrent safely. Decided to try Limewire & Gnutella - download speeds much better. BUT - in three months of downloading, I have found 85% of ALL files downloaded thru Gnutella to be seriously infected with trojans, etc. Because I have good security this has caused nothing but annoyance, but because of Gnutella's lack of security & seemingly malicious and/or careless user base, I will no longer use Limewire or Gnutella. The fact is this problem will kill the usefullness of peer-to-peer faster than any government. Back to good old slow-but-safe bittorrents. Macbeans |

I must point out that torrents are many times infected or bogus also, even when listed on 'trusted' trackers....its just a fact of life...

Cannot use Gnutella safely -EVER!!! Peerless - I know that is true. The entire internet is like this now. However, In the last year less then 4% of any files downloaded from servers using bittorrent have been infected. This is a lot different than 85% of ANY TYPE FILE downloaded from Gnutella. Just why do so many Gnutella users distribute infected files? Are they stupid, lazy, or malicious? macbeans |

Macbeans, I believe if you would do a little research on this subject you would find that the RIAA and the MPIA are behind these malicious acts. They use organizations to flood the network with fakes, worms, and viruses in hopes to discourage p2p sharing. Also take a look here. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/open-d...rch-terms.html. This should help explain it. |

MacBean It's refreshing to see a user actually understand what it going on rather than blame Limewire, this forum or anything else other than their own lack of knowledge. However, you know the Internet and gnutella network are now dangerous places and becoming more dangerous every day, especially now that hackers and criminal gangs have made an unholy allience. That is why it is so very important to have protection on your PC, as you no doubt know. You know, there is nothing I can say that you don’t really already know other than you can use any network so long as you are careful. And despite every problem you have run into, and I have also run into, the gnutella network is still worth exploring. UK Bob |

What kind of files are you finding with Trojans? I download all kinds of stuff on Shareaza and I never find any Trojans and I have McAfee... I also use Bittorrent all the time and never find any viruses in anything I download off of there either. The thing about bittorrent is that it is a community and anything containing viruses won't be around long cause it will be reported and the torrent then removed from the site. |
