I installed LW BETA 2.1.2 .
I found my firewall reporting a prgram trying to acces the net :
"JavaRun.exe located in C:\Program Files\topMoxie is listening on port TCP: 8765"
This seems to be related with the new LimeShop bull**** introduced into LW .

A further breakdown of the trust between the users and the LW crew ... :(

That you are now writing your own ad-code and stuff great .
But this silent auto-downloading of installers has to go .

As long as somebody has something to complain for Clean LimeWire will always exist .

Found a run-entry in my registry containing the following :
"C:\Program Files\topMoxie\JavaRun.exe /cp: p "C:\Program Files\topMoxie" com.ETraffic.ETProxy.ETMain"

Oh and may I people remind you when your firewall says that a program is reported listening on some port that it is inviting connections originating from the outside .
Any program running like this is per defenition a server application .

Like you explain me is that it needs net acces to download it's installer .
Then why does it keep an port open ?
Unless the connection or "download" is started from the other end downloads do not need ports listening for connections .

Edit : After closer examination I discovered it was a proxy .
You guys were gonna loop everything my browser sends or receives trhu this thing ?
God , haven't you learned a thing of the last spyware wars ?
If you tell people cleary and without too much crap what it is and what it does and give them a choice upon install they wouldn't mind installing this thing ...

VTOLfreak: look if you dont like LimeWire's installer, STOP USING IT!! Compile you're own damn version of LimeWire like you've been doing! The average pc joe doesnt care about that stuff. You have 3 options!! Use the LimeWire ad-installer version, compile your own from source, or buy the Pro version and help out development. Sounds to me like you just like whining about stuff to get attention.

How's this? Try buying something from OfficeDepot with [s]LimeShop installed.

I'm perfectly happy with ads on the client. I can live (although not necessarily happily) with referral IDs being added to URLs for shopping sites I'm already visiting. No farking way am I going to leave something on my machine that redirects www.officedepot.com to www.officemax.com/referrer=limeware.

I avoided Gator & OC. I wasn't given the opportunity to avoid LimeShop. Ad-aware didn't pick it up, and it took a good half hour of my time before I noticed it in my program list. Limeware is gone, along with any chance of them seeing $8.50 from me.

Average PC users should care about these things. And the problem is when my aunts computer slows to a crawl because of all the stuff she didn't know was being installed on there, and I have to fix it!

Changing my settings and adding menus without my consent is on par with entering my home and changing my thermostat, or painting my walls. You might think I need it warmer but I don't. IF YOU ASK BEFORE YOU MAKE THE CHANGE. Then that's ok, you have my concent. Otherwise, don't mess with my private property. I called my attorney general, and his office said that while there are no specific laws concerning this it could very easily fall under breaking and entering.

I agree the average joe pc user should care about what is installed on his computer. But he doesnt....he just wants to get on the 'Internet' to check his email, chat, and play flash games. If they really cared, they would take the time and educate themselves about certain type of programs such as spyware. The 'home to computer' analogy you're talking about doesnt work. Your computer is in no way an idea, resemblance, or associated with symbolizing as a house. You cant say someone breaking into your computer is the same as breaking into your house. For one thing its not physical. Theres just no physical damage. You should always make backups of your stuff. Its the same idea of wearing a seat-belt while driving a car. You know you can drive well but you wear it to protect yourself in case if something goes wrong. Because you know anything can happen. Its not actually hurting anyone. If something does go wrong you can always restore with the backups you've made. Anyways the list goes on and on...

Whine, whine, whine. It amazes me how many people will go into McDonalds and think nothing of plunking down $5.00 for a value meal, but will whine all day and night about spending $8.50 for software. Buy the Pro version, cheapskates, and you won't have to worry about the spyware anymore. But then what would you complain about? It's worth the money, if you think about how many hours you sit in front of your computer screen and don't have to look at the blinking ads, what a bargain.
