Restricted LAN access due to LW

Does LW really broadcast/send/receive when not actually opened? I know it can be set to run in the background but mine is not. Here's the deal...I'm a college student and I found out I'm restricted from the school LAN because they detected LW on my laptop. My choices are to either uninstall LW or do without internet on campus. I can't do without my LW. But if I don't open it does anyone have any ideas on how to keep them from detecting it again so I can get access to the campus LAN?
