Important, Could Cause Trouble, Incomplete File Won't Delete

I recently downloaded what i thought was ********* *, it wasn't, it was porn, i realized before it fully downloaded and canceled, but now the incomplete file will not download,l it just keeps on trying to work out the estimated time, never stops, and it slows my laptop right down when and after it has tried deleting it, and the "delete after so many days" isn't delete it, i tried finding the file again to try and download it fully then delete it as it says that it is 0GB. PLEASE HELP ME

Open LW and go to your library page and click on Incomplete Files. Right click on the file and delete it. If it won't delete, make sure it's not being shared and try deleting it again.

If that doesn't work, try birdy's advice here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...tml#post293695

danny-r January 15th, 2008 07:49 AM

But the thing is, to my eyes it exists, but to the computer it dosn't, its size is 0, technicly, it dosn't exist, the lw libary says it dosn't exist, i've tried unlocker but it won't delete, its in the shared folder but other files have deleted from it on the same day, the computer just doesn't want to delete it. I've run AVG 7.5, spybot search and destroy, Adware 2007, it hasn't picked anything up.

6_pac January 15th, 2008 11:21 PM

Try deleting it in safe mode.

danny-r January 16th, 2008 08:10 AM

Done

I've already tried it about 5 days ago

Lord of the Rings January 16th, 2008 09:30 AM

There's more than one option. ;) See Incomplete Download File won't delete at all (click on link). Also make sure LW is turned OFF when you attempt to delete it. ;)

danny-r January 16th, 2008 10:37 AM

No

Trieed everything on there a week ago, i know there is a way to like, back track the system to a certain date, does anyone know how to do it on Vista

Lord of the Rings January 16th, 2008 10:45 AM

How about starting up from your VISTA startup disk (CD/DVD/floppies), then try deleting.
(Sorry I didn't realise Birdy's link was same as mine.) * Make sure you are disconnected from the internet at that time. Even turn your modem off or disconnect your cable to such.

danny-r January 16th, 2008 10:50 AM

well

Well I'm young i never installed it onto the laptop, my dad did, i'm not sure whether it was already on though, it the Vista installation disk the one that says notebook or is that a program, as the box that the laptop came in says notebook on it.

Lord of the Rings January 17th, 2008 12:48 AM

Notebook is sometimes another name given for a laptop. ;) (But there is also a small program called notepad)

Sleepless January 17th, 2008 02:47 AM

Check to see if you can start your computer using only command prompt and not starting Vista at all. The main reason for files not deleting is that there are Windows processes connected with it.

Using command prompt (this is for DOS but should be the same commands)

MS-DOS help and commands

The del commands are the ones you are looking for. E.g. navigate to your user and delete the incomplete folder - deltree incomplete

danny-r January 17th, 2008 07:51 AM

None of them say that they work for vista, simple way, anyone know how to back trach the computer, im just going to try the disk and deletin, ill post results

danny-r January 17th, 2008 07:57 AM

No luck, the back tracking feature is on XP i no that, i used it once, not sure where i found it and where to find it on vista

danny-r January 17th, 2008 11:27 AM

This has just got serious, my laptop's battery is of dodgy, it needs sorting out, i'd take it to my dads house when i go down for him to sort out but with the file, i can't, i need serious help, maybe i could use the feature to back track the laptop, but i don't know where it is, please, i realy need help now

Do you mean System Restore (to restore your computer to an earlier time)?

I don't use Vista, but have a look at the info below.
Using Windows Vista System Restore :: the How-To Geek

Getting into Windows Safe Mode

Lord of the Rings January 18th, 2008 02:05 AM

Out of curiosity, have you turned on Show Hidden extensions. There may be hidden characters in the file name. Tried renaming the entire file?

danny-r January 18th, 2008 07:54 AM

I asked one of my supper genius(no exagaration) mates and he told me, but just found out it only does system things:(, please, help me

Peerless January 18th, 2008 08:48 AM

2 pieces of advice:

if you were using a dual boot machine (you know, with 2 separate OS's on it) you could remotely delete it from the other OS..

try this, move the file into its own special folder, then using safe mode delete the folder

danny-r January 18th, 2008 10:08 AM

It won't move, anyn like copying, deleting, just keeps trying to calculate the time, never does I NEED IT SORTED FOR 2MORROW

Lord of the Rings January 18th, 2008 12:02 PM

How about drag & drop a file/folder of same name into same directory, choose replace.
Be sure you are disconnected from the internet, cable at back of computer if necessary. Did you try starting up from a startup disk? Or even a network for a lan if you are connected on a lan.

danny-r January 18th, 2008 01:52 PM

I am extremely annoyed now, nothing works, it is a limewire faults, i downloaded it again to a diffrent folder, it deleted fine, it is everysince i got the new version, please could i have i limewire admin or someone help me, the update puts the incomplete folder in a diffrent place, that why its messed up. Please, a limewire admin or someone who knows the limewire software well

Peerless January 18th, 2008 02:26 PM

tell ya what...about the time Hell freezes over a LW admin (now there's a contradiction in terms) will step in and help you....try moving everything but that file out of the folder, then again try deleting the whole folder while in safe mode...

and be aware of one very simple (and vital) fact...this forum is not run by LW...and the people here are unpaid volunteers....

danny-r January 22nd, 2008 01:25 PM

It is the only thing in the folder, it will not delete in safe mode either, and it won't when running of the system disk either

Peerless January 22nd, 2008 03:22 PM

so you are saying you can't delete the folder????

danny-r January 25th, 2008 10:13 AM

no, i deleted some files from the folder whilst that file was in it, the MPG file won't delete

Peerless January 25th, 2008 03:34 PM

look d00d, you clearly are having some 'problems'....and one of them is that you have as of yet tried my advice...AND THAT IS TO FREAKING DELETE THE FOLDER THE FILE IS IN....THEN SIMPLY CREATE A NEW FOLDER OF THE SAME NAME...WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO DO FOR YOU??????

danny-r January 25th, 2008 10:50 PM

As i have said before, the file will not delete in any way, including by deletin the folder, it is all because limewire made an update an changed the location of incomplete files, every since it won't delete

Sleepless January 26th, 2008 07:07 AM

Well I don't run Vista so I don't know which options you have. That's why I need You to tell me.

When you start your computer repeatably press the F8 key until you get a boot menu.

What options can you choose?

Is there an option called "Start in safe mode using only command promt" or similar?

danny-r February 1st, 2008 09:53 AM

f8 does nothing, f12 brings all the nain options for the system up, but yes, if i hold the on button whilst it is on then boot it back up it will bring up safe mode ect. but deleting them in safe mode is useless

danny-r February 1st, 2008 10:13 AM

And renaming it freezes it up

Sleepless February 1st, 2008 07:16 PM

Try to see if you can turn off the entire Vista process after opening the Command Prompt. The reason you can't do anything with the file is because it has become connected to some process.

Like in XP I would kill the explorer.exe process. In Vista that process is probably called something else.

danny-r February 1st, 2008 07:40 PM

It is called explore.exe, it doesn't open in safe mode, and i have tried deleting it in safe mode so that means that closing it down and trying to delete is the same as doing it using safe mode, which didn't worrk

Sleepless February 1st, 2008 07:50 PM

Well since you seem to know everything, I guess not much use trying to help, but assure you you have no idea what you are saying.

Something is connected to that file and you need to shut that process down. All you need to have left are the basic things keeping the computer on and cmd.exe (command prompt, should have same name in Vista)

I have had a very similar problem i the past and it was the only way. In my case it was the explorer.exe process that was affected. In your case it might be some other process.

Apart from that. If you still can't delete it then. Is the file even there? Could be a registry malfunction. Maybe try a registry cleaner and see if it disappears. Very unlikely as it freezes your computer trying to do anything with it, but still plausible.

Edit: if you can see it in the command prompt then the file is there.

danny-r February 1st, 2008 08:53 PM

I do not alot for a 13 yr old, but if i am correct, safe mode only opens the needed things to keep it running, so that would meen the program the needs closing is not open in safe mode

Sleepless February 2nd, 2008 05:28 AM

Safe mode opens more things that you need for the task you are trying to perform. You only need to have the processes open that prevent the computer from shutting down and keeping cmd.exe running.

One thing we haven't tried is trying to figure out exactly what process is making the computer freeze.

Start the task manager in safe mode. Keep the processes tab in task manager open. rearrange by cpu use and then try doing something to the file. When the computer freezes one or two the processes should go up by a lot. If it does then you know whaqt must be stopped. Then it's just to hope it isn't an important process.

danny-r February 2nd, 2008 09:55 AM

These are the 3 processes open in order of highest CPU

explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe

the last 2 tend to keep swapping places, what should i do with them, ending explorer freezes the system up and the desktop goes black which it is meant to but the rest of the proccesses CPU goes to 00, if you could give me some more detailed instructions that would be :super:

Sleepless February 2nd, 2008 09:59 AM

I will have a look at it tomorrow. Problem is that I don't use Vista myself i.e. I don't know if the computer will even run if winlogon.exe process is stopped.

Does the command prompt go away when you end the explorer process? If it doesn't then there should be no problem deleting it through there.

Anyways like I said I will have a closer look tomorrow.

Edit: I just tried ending the explorer.exe process in XP while keeping the command prompt and it worked. So try doing that in Vista

If it does then give me the complete path to the file you want to delete and I will give you step be step instructions

danny-r February 3rd, 2008 10:28 AM

I do not under stand what you want me to do with comand promt whilst havin explorer.exe closed down

the past to the folder is

C:Users/Danny/Incomplete

there is also a file of the same type in the recycle bin, it seems to be the ones that was downloaded before the updated version of limewire, because the one in the recycle bin won't delete.

What if i downloaded the full thing, then deleted the full thing, what do you think?

george06 February 3rd, 2008 10:57 AM

Help me!

Hello guys, im new here and um well this could be really obv or it could be not lol but my limewire is broken :bangh: and yes iv re-installed it and well the problem is tht its not downloading the music....haha i click download and it dont do nothing! think u could help me out?
Thanks,
george

danny-r February 3rd, 2008 11:00 AM

Please start your own thread in future, but i have the solution

Go to tools/options then click restore default and if wll restore the default settings, problem solved, if for some reason this persists on happening then message me

Sleepless February 3rd, 2008 02:41 PM

well if explorer.exe is closed down then the file hopefully can't freeze the computer when you try deleting the file.

First turn off your internet connection. Then turn off all running programs including Antivirus and such.

Now turn on cmd.exe using the run command Start->Run cmd.exe and press enter.

Open task manager, go to processes tab, right-click on explorer.exe and choose "Stop process" then choose stop anyway when Windows says it could be dangerous.

Now type cd.. and press enter in the command prompt until you end up at C:\

type cd Users and press enter. then cd Danny enter

type DELTREE Incomplete and press enter. And hopefully the Incomplete folder will disappear now.

As for the recycle bin, that can't be done that way. You will need to navigate into the recycle bin same way as above and only delete the file. I think the command for that is DEL filename. Make sure you type the complete filename.

If this doesn't work then let me know exactly what happens. If it works then just go to start new process in task manager and write explorer.exe and press enter, then turn on Antivirus and other necessary programs before connecting to the internet again.

danny-r February 3rd, 2008 03:40 PM

It booted up in Safe Mode With Command Promt, explore was already closed down, internet on, programs like anti virus open, deltree didnt work, i dont think its a vista command, used del, works, now i need to get to the recycle bin as c:/ dosnt work with it, its more complocated, i cant restore the file either, it freezed

Sleepless February 3rd, 2008 04:03 PM

Well first one down then :)

I think the recycle bin is at C:\Recycled but very important to not delete it. just navigate to it and then delete only the file

danny-r February 3rd, 2008 04:41 PM

That didn't do it either

i did

cd..
then
del recycled

which is basicly what i did with the other one

Sleepless February 3rd, 2008 04:52 PM

Well you aren't supposed to del recycled

type cd Recycled and press enter

then del filename and enter

(filename being the full name of the file e.g stupidfile.avi)

danny-r February 4th, 2008 10:17 AM

It dosnt find the path, im guna look through the windows folder for it, if i find it it should work

danny-r February 4th, 2008 10:33 AM

Can't find it, i also used search on it

Sleepless February 4th, 2008 02:50 PM

Maybe some other user that uses Vista knows where recycled/Recycle Bin is located. Maybe try posting that question in General Vista Support - Gnutella Forums

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if it isn't at C:\Recycled then I have no idea where it is.

Is there no folder with a picture of the Recycle Bin at C:\ ?

Could be they just changed the name.

danny-r February 8th, 2008 11:21 AM

FIXED

Use this program to delete all files from the recycle bin, Click the download, run, extract to desktop, open the other folder which is now on the desktop, then run it, nowt opens up but the bin is now empty

RecycleNOW - empties your Recycle Bin instantaneously

Sleepless February 9th, 2008 05:18 AM

Nice. Glad to hear you got it sorted :)
