Just a few questions from a newbie.

Occasionaly when I search for a song i'll see exactly what I typed in but as a search result and an .mp3 file. Are these viruses?

What are .dat and .bak files that come in my limewire folder after downloading a song? I did not open them at all and deleted them in paranoia. Are they viruses?

Now here is something funny I encountered. What is it with seeing exactly what you typed in but it has something at the end "xxx hot sexy naked"?
Like i'll search numb(the song from linkin park) and see "Numb xx hot sexy naked". Are these viruses? I havent even touched those search results as they most likely have a virus.

Thanks again all!

Magirific August 12th, 2008 02:04 PM

I would like an answer asap please. Idk if these .bak or .dat files are viruses or not!

Bump

Patience is a virtue, especially when requesting help from volunteers!
And "bumps" only take up space on this forum; they don't ring anyone's bell.

The search results wherein your search is echoed back to you with something added on is simply a spam generator. After seeing my search results always including "...has orgasm on webcam", I simply added 'orgasm' to my filter. (When it's an mp3, I imagine one can only listen to said webcam orgasm).

You did the right thing. Files in your Shared (downloads) folder that you did not request should be deleted. I don't know what's in them, (perhaps they really are data and backup files); I'm not gonna look.

If you're dl'ing only mp3s and AVIs, then any strange files that come with them really are strange (delete them).

If you download torrents you may see strange files that actually belong there. (If you're downloading only via the LW search results you're not doing torrents; don't worry about it.) If you are doing torrents, stop torturing yourself with LW (use uTorrent or Azureus).

Some instant message and e-mail systems send a sound to users when a new item is received; kind of like a doorbell. Users send a 'bump' message to ring the bell again (in case the recipient was not at their computer when the previous message arrived.) Sort of like AOL's "You've got mail".

when i get replies on boards my yahoo mail just does its thing:D

Thanks for the reply. Yeah sorry I get a little antsy sometimes. However though I have another question.

I was searching for a song through limewire, couldn't find it, then decided to shut off limewire since I wasn't gonna use it at the moment(after all I hear somebody can make your computer download stuff while your AFK or something). I go into my limewire folder and in the "Incomplete" folder(which is where I saw the .bak and .dat files from the first incident as I said in my very first post up there) I see a .dat file called "Downloads.dat". I deleted this. Was this normal for this to appear or something?

Magirific August 19th, 2008 05:56 PM

Another question

I recently searched for another song, downloaded about 10% of it, then stopped it to preview it and make sure it wasnt a virus. After pressing preview like 5 times in a row I get a message saying that "there is nothing to preview". So was that file a virus or something? Btw I then canceled the download completely.

I went to my "incomplete" folder and find some files. Downloads.bak, downloads.dat. and a couple MP3 files that are the preview of my song. Apparently the song was .01 seconds long. I deleted all these files.

Now I know I am not infected with any kind of virus because the download needs to be 100% complete forn the virus to work. Can anyone confirm this statement though? :)

cootmaster August 19th, 2008 06:02 PM

i think preview needs be at least 20 secs to 1 minute
w video mpg can preview but avi MUST COMPLETE the view is on the ending of the file
if was virus the scanner should pop up to stop you
what av do you have
ya id scan the dl folder do quick check

Magirific August 19th, 2008 06:33 PM

So what do you mean by the preview needs to be from 20 secs to 1 minute?

Well I only DL mp3 files(music files) so I think I should be ok

What scanner do you speak of? I know I got a little pop up on Norton Antivirus but I didnt get a chance to read what it said.

cootmaster August 19th, 2008 06:53 PM

i meen wait for preview to dl mabee a minute of the song
ok good NORTON
it probably said some alert in the protection center history
it might give some details

Magirific August 19th, 2008 07:17 PM

Norton 360 to be exact. Is it THAT good that you had to use caps? :)

Is there any way I can view all my previous messages that it popped up? I really doubt it was telling me about a virus, cause I know sometimes it pops up to remind me of something.

Oh and is Norton THAT good that I could instal a subtle or a minor virus and not be harmed? Not that I would do that but you know those files and users always trick ya. I'm even thinking of uninstalling Limewire because its so scary what some of the things that can happen due to a virus, plus I read up on some things that have happened to users due to viruses. Besides I only needed it to find 2 anime songs anyway

cootmaster August 19th, 2008 07:21 PM

u use norton and swear by it i have NAV 08
i don't know much about 360
sounds like your safe im going w experience with frostwire

Magirific August 19th, 2008 07:24 PM

What is NAV 08 if I may ask? :) And what do you swear by? :O

To be honest in my whole life of computers I have never had any kind of virus that was fatal or anything like that. I would just hate though to get one and am VERY paranoid :).

Oh and could you please answer my new sentence which I added by edit up there in the previous post? ^^ Pasting it now:

Oh and is Norton THAT good that I could instal a subtle or a minor virus and not be harmed? Not that I would do that but you know those files and users always trick ya. cootmaster August 19th, 2008 07:28 PM

NORTON Anti Virus 08
it was caps bc like i said i swear by norton so its nice you use it
i was happy w thumbs up:idea:

Magirific August 19th, 2008 07:51 PM

So you swear by it meaning you trust it completely? :)

I got 2 more questions then I think i'm good to go. And please respond to EVERY sentence in there so I dont have to repeat myself :)

1: Is Norton THAT good that I could install a subtle or a minor virus and not be harmed?

Not that I would do that but you know those files and users always trick ya.

I'm even thinking of uninstalling Limewire because its so scary what some of the things that can happen due to a virus.

Also I read up on some things that have happened to users due to viruses.

Besides I only needed it to find 2 anime songs anyway

2: What anime is the girl from your avatar and sig from?

PS: I spaced the sentences out to make it easier on the eyes.

cootmaster August 19th, 2008 08:05 PM

1 i id NEVER trust it 100% but it works well,
no after i delete suspicious files and kill the system restore points
i never try to let anything back on my computer
just scan EVERYTHING before playing it
TRUST NO ONE or NO FILE
you should be fine

2 thats weda from Hare + Guu from funimation channel
the actress is Wendee Lee
i met few actors and actresses
at a anime convention but not wendee
weda is Hare's Mom

Magirific August 20th, 2008 06:05 AM

I think I need 2 more questions answered to clear my mind

1: Is it true you cannot get a virus from an mp3 file(the only files i've been downloading FYI) but ONLY if they ask you to download a license(which the virus is most likely in)?

2: Is it true the a virus can only be downloaeded into your computer if the download is at 100%?

cootmaster August 20th, 2008 08:24 AM

1 i downloaded a fake mp3 which was 1000kb which set norton off
frostwire halted the down load i went in the incomplete dumped file and norton cleaned the drive
i dont bother w licence
2 i guess not since norton stopped it 45% done

Magirific August 20th, 2008 11:43 AM

What is frostwire if I may ask? I would love to have something that could auto stop downloads for me. Or it was it NAV that stopped it? Either way did it liereally automatically stop it without your control?

And for me when NAV gave me the pop up Im pretty sure I stopped the download manually(you know like in order to preview)

cootmaster August 20th, 2008 01:13 PM

frostwire kinda like lime pro if it was free
FrostWire.com - Official Website - Free BitTorrent/Gnutella Client - No subscriptions, Just download and install also has chat
btw im frostwire/irc chat support
my frost alerted me by stopping the transfer as well as norton popping up

Magirific August 20th, 2008 07:31 PM

But how does frostfire detect the viruses? And if they detect them shouldnt they have eliminated the files already before somebody dls it? And it probaly wont detect SOME hidden viruses right? I hope that detecter is very reliable.

Also I looked at the link and noticed "fire wall to firewall transfers". What does that mean?

And if Frostwire is better then why doesnt everyone use it?

Are there files that you can dl by frostwire that may have viruses? Or are all files 100% safe?

What kind of message do you get if you DL a file with a virus like you said?

cootmaster August 20th, 2008 08:15 PM

i saw it on frost ONCE

something like problem with file i forgot exact message
preference FROST LIME are SAME except chat irc few extras
there are tons ppl that use both deepens if you want chat or not or if u want support room
the fire wall transfer thing idk you need go read frosts forum
NO TREAT EVERY file as dangerous and scan everything

i use frost bc im support team i switched from bearshare to lime for about 2 seconds then frost
i cant explain any better im only going on way frost works compared to lime so i cant really help

Magirific August 21st, 2008 06:59 PM

You know how with limewire you search something, download, and it hooks your computer to theirs to download the file like limewire or frostwire? Is there anything like that BUT they check the files(they being the people who made it) for viruses? Basically anything completely safe like limewire.

Blackhorse 70V August 28th, 2008 02:49 AM

You are using peer-to-peer file-sharing software. No one monitors, scans, or even keeps a list of what peers do on the gnutella network. That's the only way it continues to exist, as opposed to Napster. If you want guaranteed safety with downloads you'll have to subscribe to a commercial service.

Never, NEVER, open a file to see if it contains a virus. That's like drinking a liquid to see if it's poison. Read about avoiding problems with dls in this forum (Getting Started Using LW), read about using Peer Guardian and Bitzi. Or, just buy the two songs you want and have no worries.
