gratis March 11th, 2002 12:40 AM

dude!! dont' reformat. I bet there's a way to delete the thing. Can you do some google searches? I'd repost this on all the gnutella forums with a more descriptive header eg. "How do I delete this porn dialer? Please help." If all else fails I bet you can even email the german site and ask them how to delete the program.

steve196 March 11th, 2002 02:59 PM

The possibility, that this has to do with limewire is small. I can think of two ways, how you got this system hijacker on your computer.
The first is, you may have downloaded and viewed a .exe, .doc, .rtf, .vbs or similar file through a filesharer. If it was this, you cannot blame anyone but yourself.
The second is a website, that exploits vulnerabilities in Internet explorer (ActiveX, Jscript->ActiveX and so on) to edit your registry and run code on your computer. On the lavasoft forum there is a thread about such a site, that behaves similar to what you described and uses a misspelled name of a popular domain, to trap surfers by a typo. Removing this can be tricky, but people can help you, if you post more technical details about it.

bub2000 March 11th, 2002 05:57 PM

Clear your IE cache, deleting offline content too. Go to Symantic and run their online virusscan.

no, reformat!

No, no, reformat!

And then install a proper operating system and some proper software.

God I get sick of this lame 'oh windows is so vulnerable to viruses' crap. Microsoft don't fix it because they get so much media publicity from it, d*ck. What else could get them on the 6 o'clock news three times a year? That's a multi-million dollar timeslot.

Remove German Porn Dialer

I can't knock Limewire because I love the website creator softwares I've gotten from Limewire. I just pity Limewire for the potential customers they lose due to the problem of these porn dialers attached to MANY downloads here. Most folks don't know how to get rid of the dialers, and the word is getting around to avoid Limewire because of these porn dialers. Steve196, these dialers are being picked up in other ways, but they are being attached to Limewire downloads as well. What an easy way for them to trick folks into huge phone bills as well as to pick up new sicko customers! Most folks can't get the dialer out of their system, and don't realize they are dialing everytime they accidently activate it while trying to close it!

Unfortunately, these dialers aren't a virus...so they're not detected by your antivirus software. They aren't a typical program...so you can't use your uninstall utility to find and remove them. And Steve196...it IS coming from SOME Limewire downloads. I've picked it up ONLY when downloading from Limewire.

This is how I've gotten rid of it on my system...first of all, the minute I see it loading, I do NOT click the "X" to close it...this just activates more things to pop up. I click in the left corner and choose "close". I right-click the dialer's icon and view the properties in order to see where the heck it's tucked into my puter. I scroll my program files for it...it's always been found by digging this way~~~~~>My Computer, Programs, WINNT, Dialers. If I've tried to hi-lite and delete the dialer in the program files, it won't do allow me to delete it. I drag the whole danged dialer file to the recycle bin. I look for any icons the program installed on my desktop and in my startup menu, right-click and delete the icons. Then, I empty my recycle bin. Lastly, I go into my Tools, Internet Options, Content, Certificates, and click on each tab of each type of certificates. I look for any certificate with names/words which appeared in the properties description of the dialer. I delete these certificates. These certificates basically give the dialer permission to reload into your system. Get them out! Finally, I change the security settings for the items which allow scripts to run on my computer to "prompt". (If you disable them, you can't navigate many websites...if you set these to "prompt" when one is running...well...you start to recognize that when you click on a link, you know a script should run and to click "ok" to the prompt, but if the prompt appears for no reason, you know something is trying to run on its own...click "NO". Usually removing the certificate is enough to finally kill the stupid dialer off. I don't find that I need to leave the security settings on prompt. The prompts can make you nutty if you surf the web alot, and I haven't needed them once I discovered removing the certificates.

I'm no whiz...I can't tell you too much in the line of explaining why...but this has gotten the darned dialer out of there. I ONLY pick that dialer up when I download some software at Limewire...and no, it's NOT adult software.

Remove German Porn Dialer

Oh...forgot...empty your temporary files and cookies~~~~>Tools...Internet Options...delete cookies...delete files...delete history (if you don't want to delete all your history, just hi-lite the links in the history list and delete them). Be sure you empty your trash! I know dif OS's use dif. terminology & menus...but you get the idea.

Remove German Porn Dialer

And no, I didn't download any obvious exe, etc. files. I downloaded only zips...scanned for viruses before opening. So what do you recommend? I've had many successful downloads without viruses or dialers and such. Had one backdoor virus...that's it. When the antivirus picked up on the backdoor virus, I opened Limewire's shared folder and deleted the software download without opening it. Lately it seems many of my Limewire attempts have the dialer attached.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I have a Macintosh... :)

If it's any consolation, the German government is cracking down on this sort of thing in a big way.

If it's any consolation, the German government is cracking down on this sort of thing in a big way.

How ???

Freiluft July 30th, 2002 07:14 PM

Now I wonder if we are talking about the same things. These little pests attempt to dial a high-cost telephone number, either to some sex site or a dial-up per call internet "service", both with exorbitant prices. The German government is insisting on transparency and the ability to recover money from these people, plus making it more difficult for them to bill using Deutsche Telekom. In other words, it will be easier to nail them for fraud.

If what you are talking about is something like an eternal pop-up in a browser, but doesn't try to get to your phone line, then it is something else.

katiebythegate January 9th, 2003 06:42 PM

RE: German porn dialers

Yes, I am talking about the porn dialers...not popup ads and popup sex ads. Let's not even get into adware and sex popups. That's a whole other realm of torture for basic puter users.

I forgot to mention that I also delete the download from my Limewire shared folder. That's most important. It's not a "true" virus--in the sense that your antivirus software won't pick it up...to the person who asked about that. I did a download (always zip files) and scanned it before opening. A virus never showed. Then I unzipped the file and scanned it again. Then opened it and the dialer activated. This ONLY occurs for me after downloading software through Limewire...and every time.

I think that it's either set up like a virus, or it's what you are downloading...just it's being given the name of the most popular softwares folks are trying to download. You think you're getting a flight simulator, a SIMS game, web creation software...but you're getting this dialer instead. The average person doesn't know how to get it out of their computer.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT CLICK on the dialer when it opens! It seems no matter where you click to close it, that activates it to place a call. Use your task manager to close the danged thing. On my puter, I hold down CTRL with ALT with Delete (all three keys together at the same time). The Task Manager pops up. You see a list of all the programs running at that moment. Hi-lite the darned dialer and click "end program".

Then go clear out all the footprints the thing left in your puter. Security Certificates, temporary files, etc.

Lastly, change the security settings on your system: block the type of certificates (use a higher security level), and set active scripting to "prompt". After a period of time, you can safely put that scripting setting back to normal. You don't want to completely block scripting because a lot of sites you visit use scripts. Yahoo is one of the most popular sites you'll need it for.

When I mention scripting, that's what Steve is referring to when he talks about this thing taking advantage of Internet Explorer to run code on your puter.

I wish you'd have posted the link to the lavasoft thread, Steve, or copied the pertinent part into the discussion here.

And nope...I don't use Limewire anymore. It's not worth the headache with the dialers. I use many other peer-to-peers with no problems at all.

RE: German porn dialers

The german gov. is cracking down on this? I've never heard a thing about it except in here. How about this...LIMEWIRE should crack down on it??? Ummmmmm...but that would be a really dumb idea, wouldn't it?

Juggalo15 January 10th, 2003 12:31 PM

Yea right

There is no way you can blame this on Limewire. Number 1.Why would any moron download an .exe file on their computer, limewire won't let you open them in the shared folder window in limewire for a reason. 2.Limewire is not the network, its just a program,if you really wanna blame it on somethin blame it on the Gnutella .6 protocol. Limewire is not responsible for its prick users who have stuff like that on their computer and your prolly not even sure if your downloading from another Limewire user,it could've been from a Morpheus,Bearshare,Shareaza,Gtk-Gnutella,Freewire,Gnucleaus,Xolox, ect.Yes,the Gnutella protocol has more than 1 program on it if you didnt know.

p.s. This was probably only stickied to show you that .exe files aren't safe. Also goes for any excutable file...I know i spelled the last word wrong, you get it.

Juggalo15 January 10th, 2003 07:00 PM

sorry for bein a lil mean on my post above, lol, jus a bad mood. One thing that might pick up the dialer is spy bot search and destroy.I know it gets rid of some dialers so try it:D

I think the site is www.lavasoft.nu

Good luck.
try shareaza.... www.shareaza.com for a real good p2p client.

Strange search results

I don't know what it is. But lately when I'm surching for something I got 4 differnt files as a result:
XXX(the real thing)
XXX(awesome!!)
XXX(please share!!)
XXX
They are always very small files (378 KB), clayming to be a mp3 file.

To contain music they are to small. But what is it? I haven't downloaded it and I woun't do that. Still I afraid - could it be something on my computer?

Thanks for all tips

They are porn files. If you go to your options (in LimeWire) you can Filter hosts. Enter the IP addresses for those files and they won't show up anymore.

kromag February 19th, 2003 10:44 AM

awesome, please share & the real thing 378 kb files

You need to block this host it's easy and frickin works. Tools, Options, Filters, Hosts the number is *IP address removed* at least until they get another ip address.

Anyway, Limewire rules

brown_soulja April 27th, 2003 06:36 AM

I have downloaded this German Porn Dialer thing before. It is usually hidden as a Crack Program for moajor softwares, Registry cleaners, internet speeding up programs, download accelerators, and other utilities designed to help you get teh better out of your computer.

Please try to avoid downloading these kind of small 2 - 200 kb files with unknown extensions from limewire, kazza or any other P2P or website where you don't know who you are downloading from.

If you really need these small free programs you can always get them for free from downloads.com where each one is tested and is what it says it is.

As for removing it, I only found success in rebooting, hope someone finds a way to rid of this very soon. The problem is it is very hard to track down where this program is on your computer, and I think it installs itself in several places and then replaces any one of it when you delete it.

That might have sounded a lil crap but I aint a techie it was the best discription I could give.

Because the dialers are written for PC (*.exe) so they don't work on Mac, same for stupid virii

spybot

I've never gotten anything bad from limewire, but i only get music and avoid all those obviously fake files that are too small etc. But i downloades spybot search and destroy just to see what it would find. HOLY CRAP! 3 pages of stuff that wasnt s'posed to be there! and i dont mean cookies either. What a great little tool, everyone should have it.

jinsequa July 15th, 2003 06:22 PM

limewire also does not fully uninstall either using their uninstall program or windows add/remove feature. It leaves junk in your registry and you can only remove it by messing with the registry or utilizing the windows configuration utility and unchecking it from loading on startup (what I did). So if you are getting a "WJViewer error- main could not load" after uninstalling....that's why.
As for the dialer...I have had success in using "find file" and finding every file created in the last day and delete the ******* from there.

limewire now sucks.

Response to German Dialer -- Got me too

WARNING TO ALL: DOWNLOADERS PLEASE READ: BE CAREFUL OF x-FINDER Disguised as what U want!

While doing a search for "Teal" software I came across what claimed to be "Teal_Crack".zip. When I opened it (and before clicking "install" or otherwise giving permission) it slammed in to my start up menu and could not be deleted. It did not appear in "Add/Remove Programs."

Only by using a registry cleaner to delete from start up menu was I able to then go in and find it (hidden in program files under WINNT/Dialer!) and ERASE that *******.

It will disguise itself as almost any app YOU are LOOKING FOR; I don't know how to trace these pricks because I didn't note the Location Number -- but IT IS AROUND 70k and will appear in the EXACT WORDING of what you were looking for.

Take care everybody -- please leave this very small text file in your shared folder.

One easy, safe solution from your phone company ,900-call block.

PaulLimewireFan2003 August 20th, 2003 11:49 AM

No That Easy

Not that easy, my friend. These things don't often call 900#s. I have DSL and no modem/phone line -- still don't want that UNSOLICITED CRAP on my computer, and neither should you. God knows what other harm it could do, and no on asked for it. It is fraud, basically.

Several other members have posted instructions -- one girl in particular--with clearer instructions than mine for getting rid of it. Please give it a try if you end up contracting it -- the effort is worth it.

Firenexx September 4th, 2003 12:58 PM

Umm... It's now limewire's fault you got that virus. Even if you don't download .exe, vbs, etc. files, it's still your fault. .Zip files can contain all of those types of files.
Oh and about the kiddy porn? That's not limewires's fault either. They cannot be held liable. The reason: In order for them to be able to effectively block, delete it, and ban the ip addresses, they would have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on photo recognition software that would take precious gigabytes of hard drive space, take months to download, and also, software like that has not been invented yet. They could just filter out the file names, but that wouldn't work. Some do not even have regular file names so people get tricked often. I once downloaded a zip file that supposedly had a song in it. It instead had some really sick kiddy porn.... I hope those people burn. MWA HA HA HA HAAA!!!!! Also, if you find kiddy porn while browsing a host or searching (hopefully not for that), then I encourage you to report those IP adresses to the proper Authorities.

rustytinman September 6th, 2003 09:18 AM

Have a friend in London having troubles with a virus.

With some time to kill due to rainy weather ( no, no... not tennis... I was ready for gardening chores!), I thought of checking out LW forum and ran across this thread. I proceeded to check it out for myself.

Runnnig a search for Spybot the following appeared.

Four IP addresses, seven offerings to share SpyBot SD, all files corrupt and virus ridden. A Norton Pop-Up appeared as each was added to my shared folder, telling me that a was removed from my system.

You may want to block these IP's
38.144.198.150
192.168.1.101
68.102.207.117
80.132.93.239

80.132.93.239, when browsed showed 387 files, all porn and other "helpful" and oft searched for software.

You don't have to go very far to find a terrorist or anarchist today, do you?

porn dialers fact of life when you use p2p or dl anything this is why you have to have two things Virus Scan and Ad-Aware becuase most dialers aren't viruses they are just annoying progs that plant in registry and datamine all you need is Ad-Aware to get rid of them ( and a good registry cleaning after wards)
