I want the old Limewire back! I downloaded this new version of Limewire, and I DO NOT like it, for the following reasons: 1) There's a video/advertisement in my face, and I can't make it go away. 2) I can't preview a file (so I can hear the song; see if I like it) 3) can't cancel a download (if I don't like the song, I'm cancelling 4) my drive seems to be working a lot more with this thing; I don't want it turning all the time. I don't like that..... (I solved most of that when I figured out this new sharing thing, as it was initially trying to share a jillion files, but it still works too much) 5) I don't like the look. The old version was simpler. 6) People can't leave an excellent, well designed program alone. You can only improve so much, and rest is superfluous at best, and usually just detrimental. How do I get the old version back? I genuinely dont like this "improved" version. And by "downgrading," so to speak, will it destroy my existing library? |
Same!!! I hate the new limewire....let me know if you find out how to get the old version back, i've already tried uninstalling and downloading the old version and you still get the new one :bangh: |
Try here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...lw-4-18-a.html I'd recommend LW 4.18, though I left a link for other versions. ;) |
not a problem It wasn't any problem for me. I just went to the limewire site, and downloaded the older/better version (4.18). I extracted the files, and just installed over my "improved " version. It was easy. I am surprised to hear someone couldn't get the old version back, using the same method. Now that poses a new question or two: If I upgrade to Pro version (which I might do one day), do I get a pro 4.18 or would I be forced to accept this new version? Another question: Is there any way to eliminate the thing asking me to upgrade to the the new version? I tried it, didn't like it, and I'm back. |
I think they could have made the original look nicer.. |

You could try asking at this other forum: LimeWire Forums Sorry, the update nag's something that you just have to live with if you want to use LW 4:( No matter what version you use - if there's a newer one available then you'll see an update nag. This goes for Pro users as well. |
I got rid of Limewire Pro 5.12, and reinstalled 4.18.8 Basic using the links provided here. However, I cannot get back to 4.18.8 Extended Pro (which I have paid for). Any ideas? |
Of course, go to your personal Pro download page, the one you bookmarked. :) If didn't bookmark it you should in future. ;) Either go to your email customer support sent you with the pro download link, else go to the support page: Lime Wire » Support :) On your Pro page, you will see a link on the 'left' side of page (opposite side to the basic LW download page), & choose Classic. ;) Example image: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...e-old-inst.gif |
on 4.18 does it let u preview the whole song? (im new 2 limewire) |
Whatever version of LW you're using, you can only preview as much of the file as you've downloaded. LW connects you to other users for downloading - there's no central server. So you have to download at least part of a file from another user to be able to preview it:) If you're new to LW, check out the user guide & FAQ here: LimeWire FAQ and User Guide And also have a look at the sticky threads (in red) at the top of different forum sections here;) |
You can only preview as much as you have downloaded. And usually slightly less than you have downloaded because LW does not necessarily download the file's data parts sequentially. Example, you downloaded 15% of a song file. You could probably preview about 10-14% of the song. (Perhaps 20-30 seconds of a 4 minute song in that example.) Remember, these files are on each person's computers, not hosted on a website. These files are what people like you & I share. |
For different reasons, I totally want old format back. It was just easier, more usable (for lack of a better term) and lacking things like "stop download" feature that another poster mentioned. I totally do not like new version. |
You can revert to LW 4.18.8 whenever you like, whether you're a Pro user (providing your Pro benefits are still current) or basic user. If you use basic: Get LimeWire for Your Platform - Lime Wire If you use Pro, use your Pro download link & then on the right side of the page, you'll see Get LW Pro 4.18... click on that link. LW 4.18.8 has some problems when it comes to resuming incomplete downloads from other versions. If you have incomplete downoads from LW 5 that you'd like to resume in an earlier version of LW, please let us know before you get rid of your LW 5 & we can give you more info about that & suggest a better LW version to use:) |
Thank you Thanks so much for this info. I just really like the older format. |
I find that LW 5 has more consistent network and connection behavior than 4.xx. BUT, I still downgraded because 50% of the useful functionality is MISSING from 5.xx I've been in the software business for more than 20 years, and the cardinal rule is, NEVER take anything away!!! Not sure what the designers were thinking, but basic file management is totally gone! What the heck. Basic removal of stalled files takes hours and a thousand mouse clicks if you have a bunch coming in. It was so easy before. I could get used to the layout of the new version, but for goodness sake, where it the functionality? Insane |
Perhaps you should see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...downloads.html There were some differences we experimented with & found. LW 4.16 seems superior to LW 4.18 for downgrading to. And I do recall early complaints about LW 4.18 which changed the LW download preferences location to the main LW preferences folder & the actual LW download location to a different location. This is besides the complaints of the time. |
You can find an older classic version at oldversion.com As long as your media has not been removed from comp. the older version will read it all and add it to your library. I did it, I regret paying the $15 to upgrade to 5.0 |
If you actually used LW 5 with downloading, you should follow the instructions listed in the link in my above post. Else an older version than LW 4.18 will not read your incomplete files. And LW 4.18 does not do a good job of resuming them anyway. |
Count me in as someone who HATES LW5.*-- I decided to give it another shot and after 2 days of utter hair pulling, I went back to 4.18.8. Why try to reinvent the wheel?!? I found LW5 VERY user un-friendly after using previous versions. Sure the older ones had their quirks but I got used to them--in 5, it's a total cluster F All that needed to be done was incorporate the new stuff within the old stuff and put a new 'paint job' on it, NOT try and make it 'sparkly' and 'spiffy' with bad fonts and worse user interface. Half the things that had access with a click or 2, now I had to scrounge around for it---and a number of thngs I wanted wern't there. The D/L window stinks as does the Incomplete File folder options Hey I know it's free and I appreciate it greatly but geeez---what a mess---Too Much Too Soon to quote the NY Dolls LP name went back to 4.18.8 and lost 95% of my incomplete files- thank you very much |
You obviously did not follow my advice  This 'still' works even if you downgrade from LW 4.18 to 4.16, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...downloads.html :) FYI the LW 5.2.2 beta has the download window visible at all times even if you're viewing the Library, P2P Network Window, Uploads window or browse results, the Download window will show all the time. And it is resizable. A big improvement over LW 5.1 & also better than LW 4 in that respect. LW 5.2.2 also introduced a couple new filters, such as a size filter. ;) |
YES!! haha, I'm not the only one who hates the new LimeWire then? I dont feel so alone anymore... |
The New lime sucks big time, and it's not because of operating systems or not knowing how to use it either. |
I'm sick of all the spam and rubbish that comes up when i try to look for the simplest things. |
Check some advice here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/345936-post2.html :) |

No, I am not defending LW- You'll never catch me doing anything that is so socially irresponsible! The garbage is part of the current system which is continuously under attack from mercenaries working for industries, governments and 'special interest groups'- Plus idiots and fools- meaning 'us' because 'we' are the network. PLUS any member of the Gnutella Network community who allows incomplete download sharing. If you haven't first tested a file then you should never share it. Shame on all developers who continue to use default settings on install that include 'Partial File Sharing'. (Or, worse, even require it!) They are after 'efficiency' at the eventual cost of the network. We are in a different world now and no file should ever be offered for sharing that has not been first completely tested. The garbage is, ultimately, our fault if we do not self-police our own network. This means that BITZI also cannot benefit us if we do not make the effort to 'feed' BITZI when we encounter a rogue file. The survival of Gnutella Network is our responsibility and depends on no one else. btw- Try a search using only your own name spelled backwards. Make a note of the file sizes and types! Avoid all similar files. ;) Speaking of spam, Gretsky09 sure does have a pong about him! Nice sig :w00t: |
you could have chosen to report that post you know.... |
I don't like the new Limewire because it called me " A leaf connected to 25 peers and 18 leafs" Couldn't I at least have been a larch? |
The best fix: Downgrading to LimeWire 4 from 5 & resuming incomplete downloads :) A leaf is the normal word for anybody connected to an ultrapeer. LW Basic connects to 3 ultrapeers, Pro connects to 5. Each of those connectors are called leafs. :) BTW sounds like you are connected as an ultrapeer yourself with so many connections. :) There are advantages being an ultrapeer which includes being able to download from more hosts per file. ;) |
That's what I thought too...thus my outrage |
Nothing to complain about ... though ... I'd have thought you should be called an ultrapeer. No matter .. still connecting as an ultrapeer so get better results. :) Although the connections window or at top of interface might say leaf .. but it 'may' say ultrapeer in the advanced window under tools menu. ;) I'm not sure because I usually choose not to become an ultrapeer. |
Success Rule #1: Keep people on-line, and the ONLY way to do this is to keep all versions (Especially the free one) likable! You do not sell Pro by making the free version unbearable. You sell it by saying: Hey, you like the free one you'll like Pro better. This is NOT complicated gentlemen. You really need to fire your marketers. |
