What does mp4 mean?

Usually when I am downloading movies I choose .avi files because I seem to have the least problems with my limited knowledge of all the different 'formats' and what is required to run them.
I am trying to download a movie and can only get an excellent quality version in mp4 so I would like to know what that means and also what software is required to run it, please?
