let's be constructive - development wish-list

other discussion areas have a wish-list thread. think we should get one going here also. this really might help vinnie to get ideas for further developments (instead of wasting all his time with discussions).

i will start:

- result searching
a search the results option. field to enter words which instantly are used to filter the search results.

- QoS filtering
possibility to include QoS as search criteria (maybe post search). measuring available bandwith and showing if there are slots available would be good. maybe the latter could be implemented as a per-file function.

- Peer requirements
possibility to set requirements on other peers. for example so that the client doesn't keep connections with hosts having a ping > 1000, sharing less than 2 gigs, having less than 10 connections to other hosts - whatever seems sensible from the technical viewpoint also. if number of connections etc. is auto-set depending on the own connection speed, this would be an automatic determination of host/client like networks.

- download-splitting
i can't say whether the protocol allows this. but splitted downloads running simultaneously on different hosts would be greatest thing i could think of. well, if i get download rates of >1mbps i don't care about this feature, but unfortunately the usual download rate of 50kbps would be enough if spread to 10 connections. but this would include determining identical files (upon filesize and parts of the name - difficult i think).

well, guess that would improve the experience a lot already. i am sure i missed a lot of things - so let us hear them. and let's hope p2p will have a long life :)

...more wishes

I think it's a good idea to keep a wishlist running.

I support the wish of Peer requirements very much. Up to now I've always checked my peers from time to time and kicked the ones with no or just few files. This enhances my probability to find my files.

I'd also like to have a new version of bearshare that doesn't pass along filenames longer than a certain number of characters. Like this we could avoid that every useless file has an addition like "illegalpornsexbritneypreteendivxwarezwhorecumbitc hanaldumbmoney****" just in order to generate more hits. This could enhance the quality of search results a lot!

For search results there should be the option not to display files which contain a certain word f.e. "zeppelin -led"

Bye,

oppossum

Saving Settings

Saving column settings is definitely at the top of my wishlist. But ... with the release of version 2.2.6 it's getting closer to a reality since this version will now save window positition and sizes. WooHoo!!!

Yes

Saving the window position...freakin LONG overdue!

How about a split uploading system where we could control the number of large files AND the number small files uploading. A slider control could be introduced allowing us to differentiate between large and small files. I have many smaller files that would upload quickly if I didn't have six people uploading 50+ mb files all at the same time. This could help gnutella a lot, especially dial-up users who look for smaller files.

zeroshadow July 14th, 2001 06:02 PM

I like that idea!

How about auto researching. Phex uses that and I was able to download a lot more files because of it.
