Feature request
 

Hi there.

I am sick and tired of problems with the Gnutella network and with certain clients and users in particular.

Please consider intruducing the following features in a future release of Bearshare:

(These features are already present in some clients e.g. Gnucleus)

Blocking: capability to block an entire domain, all users of a specified gnutella client, a certain connection speed and below, all users behind a firewall, to the already present block by IP

Filtering: Automatic filtering of certain file extensions (expressed as a list of file extensions to filter out) in the setup options.

Up/Downloads: Option to always drop an upload/download when the speed is below the minimum indicated for a set amount of time.

Sharing: The File Monitoring feature does not work properly, new files will occasionally not appear (especially when a file already shared is renamed instead of a new one created). New files are shared correctly, BUT DO NOT ALWAYS APPEAR in the shared files list, leaving you to wonder whether they are or not until someone starts downloading them. Make the "Rescan" function eliminate files that no longer exist from the shares list.

Sharing: Add the option to stop sharing files on an individual basis.

Also please sort out the UI problems this client has had ever since its release and those that have been introduced with 2.2.7

You'll be happy with 2.3.0 which will come out soon, the GUI is much improved...

I believe the Block IP is sufficent, what your asking for is a Mass-blockage... I doubt this is really necessary, in the rare occasion you have problems with another host on the gnutella network, blocking one IP will solve your problem.

the filtering you talk about will be present in 2.3.0

and concerning the file monitor, i think vinnie has plans to get rid of the file-monitor and replace it with something much better...

so basically all your reasonable requests will be present soon

hello everyone.

I think everyone's looking forward to bearshare evolving. having said that, in this particular case i agree with the original poster: the IP block is no longer sufficient to deal with some of the features the network has developed in the last year or so. for instance, for the last 2 weeks i have been keeping an eye out for the performance of certain clients, it is my experience that those using Limewire and Swapnut have an extremely frustratingly high likelyhood to either freeze or drop transfers after 1 minute from the time of connection. i have a 7.2 Mb file which it seems is only owned by ONE gnutella user and I have been trying to download it for the last 10 days, so far I have 3.9 MB's worth - not due to bandwith limitations as the transfer speed is very high in the extremely rare cases where I can get a download slot and the remote servent does not simply stop sending or drop the connection. similarly, i am flooded with requests for certain files by Limewire and Swapnut users, which take away bandwidth and download slots from others simply to drop the connection or freeze between 45 seconds and a minute from the start of the transfer. This happens to a lesser degree with Gnotella and does not happen with Bearshare/Gnucleus/Gnut/(other) servents and with people on all kinds of networks and providers. let's not even go into the subject of web-based downloads which just about everyone hates. i have in fact tried out both Limewire and Swapnut in the last week, they are obviously targeted at inexperienced users and while cute and easy to set-up and run, they lack features and are slow and ponderous beasts. i have also tried gnucleus and i run gnut on my gnu/linux box, they are excellent clients which have what you (rightly) call mass blocking features, you don't have to implement these measures if you don't need them, but are there if you truly feel they are required. as of yesterday i have now modified gnut to reject all connections from Limewire and Swapnut, but unfortunately cannot do the same with Bearshare. as for file exclusion lists and range/domain blocking, the real question is 'why NOT have them?'. most people will never use them or know they are there, but those that truly need them will abandon Bearshare for Gnucleus so they can get them or make their own mods to the servent. i am sure that is also undesirable to Bearshare.

does anybody else share my frustration with Limewire and Swapnut ? if so let the developers know how you feel so they either sort out the affected -features- in their servents or become aware that they will be blacklisted by a growing number of alternative servents users.

I have a similar problem - BTW it seems that limewire and swapnut for some reason do not work too well with people connected via BT Openwold, are you ? - but the most frustrating thing is that for the last 6 days I have had a 7.0 MB file in my download queue. There is only one user of gnutella with this file, from whom I have downloaded 6.5 MB of it but for the last 4 days every time Bearshare tries to connect to it it gets a "refused".

The funny thing is, he/she has liberally leeched files off me, and still does, I can see their IP quite clearly in the upload window.

I am so frustrated by this failure to download the last 500 KB or so that I am getting a severe case of "Gnutella rage". If gnucleus can permanently block an IP, (unlike Bearshare, which only puts up a temporary block until you restart the program) then I will definitely move over to it and retailiate by disallowing all downloads from this individual - even if it means I will have to wait until someone else puts up the file I want, it does not look like I am going to get it anyway
