BS Problems
 

Not sure if this is a BS problem, or maybe just a Gnutella problem. Running 5.1.0b25, using BearStart to get it going. Running under XP Pro with no firewalls, even at the router (this is a dedicated share machine). Also running Peer Guardian 2 with the latest data, as well as the current hostiles list.

I've had this problem before - uploads dropping to next to nothing, even though I'm running in Ultrapeer with connections at 26/45. For about the last 24 hours, uploads max at 1, and other requests just show up as red in the upload window, not even queuing them. Ordinarily, there are 10 to 12 uploads going simultaneously. I've rebooted the net connection, the router, and the machine, in an attempt to maybe reinitialize something that's been fubar'd. No luck. Either no uploads at all, or it'll max at one.

In frustration, I killed BS, and fired up Limewire (latest version). Within twenty minutes, there were 10 simultaneous uploads going on. Oh yeah - downloads worked just fine in BS, and in Limewire.

So, the above test narrowed it down for me - it's a BS specific problem, although it could have something to do with how BS is talking to the network (the horizon number is screwed up again - says it's '1').

Anyone have any idea's? I'm pretty good at troubleshooting this stuff, but I'm out of idea's, now.

Check the Setup/Uploads tab.

Check the settings in Setup/Connection.

Try changing your listener port while you're in there.

Try dropping out of ultrapeer mode ( Setup/Service ) for a while.

Check that the speed throttle slider on the bandwidth graph is all the way to the right.

10 max in queue
Allow others to browse in on
requests are logged

Slider bar is all the way to the right

I'll try dropping out of ultrapeer, and see what that does.

As for the listener port - that has to match the one set in my router. I change it, and nothing will get through.

I just uninstalled BS beta, and installed BS Lite 5.2.5. Same issues - lot's of upload requests, nothing going out. I've verified the settings in BS, and in the router, and rebooted all hardware again as well. Next step is to try running BS on a different system and see what it does.

The horizon is provided by a special heartbeat node which collects the stats and
also remotely controls all Bears version 5.2 and up. It's not essential, and given
the remote controls that were added, we're all a lot better off without it.

Cox may be interfering with uploads again and detecting by software type instead
of protocol and port. They have been caught illegally sending forged TCP reset
packets to both ends of an upload connection and will probably end up losing a
class action in court over this, or even get in trouble with the FCC.

Enable the Console View and start turning on reporters for uploads, queuing and
connections logic. More specific info on errors will show up in there.

If you haven't done so already, enable all of the columns in the Uploads View.

Better yet, if you can set your monitor to 1600x1200 download this and unzip it
into the program folder.
I've added some console settings you can paste into freepeers.ini.

Thanks.... I'll take a look at those settings. I don't think it's Cox doing it, since Limewire runs fine on the same box, with essentially the same settings. I just had it up, and had 10 simultaneous uploads going on it (in leaf mode).

I disabled the UDP reporter in the console, since it returns pages and pages of the Limewire messages. Haven't seen anything of interest pop up there yet.

BS Problems, Update
 

Well, the upload issues are gone. My server (and BS) have been up and running now for 8 days, 4 hours, non stop. Uploads are at 16,079. Why did it start working again? Not a clue. It started again just as mysteriously as it stopped. Troubleshooting narrowed it down to a BS problem, as Limewire would run fine on the same machine, but BS would just sit there and flail. Even tried different versions of BS, and would get the same (non) results.

So, I know this about it:
- it's not a provider issue. If it were, then Limewire wouldn't work, either.
- It's not a system software or net hardware issue - see above.
- I *suspect* it is something in Gnutella that is targeting BS specifically, but I know of no way to detect that. I've heard that Free Peers used to be able to exert some measure of control (or interference) with their software, so maybe the mechanism is still there.

If any of you out there are encountering similar problems (people sporadically not being able to get files from you), let me know, and let's compare notes.
