May I ask which version of BearShare you are using? :)
Do you have BearShare set to be allowed in your firewall for both TCP and UDP?

LOTR is on holidays at the moment :)

Open Bearshare, click on Help & see whether there's an 'about bearshare' option or something like that. Then you should be able to see which version you're using.

Sounds to me like you're using one of the newer, paid versions of BS (which we don't offer support for since they don't use the Gnutella network).

LOTR gives an explanation here (click on link): I paid and now "LICENSE REQUIRED"! Help!

Then it's one of the MusicLab versions that LOTR referred to in the link in post #6.
Sorry, but we don't offer support for those versions, since they don't use the Gnutella network.

Most BS users here prefer to use the version mentioned here: BearShare has been sabotaged.

However, if you want to keep using the version that you have, see whether there's a 'help' or 'support' link on the main page of your BS.

the expired beta version we do support does not have a working chat/messaging feature as said feature ran through BearShare servers (and since they are out of business, said servers are not longer operable)
