LimeWirePro/Basic 4,14.8 - Blank window on Ubuntu 7.04

I installed LimeWire Pro 4.14.8 on Ubuntu 7.04 using the .DEB file from the official LW Pro site. Java 1.5.0_11 was automatically installed during the LW Pro installation.

However when I run LW, either from the Ubuntu menu or by running 'limewire' at the command prompt, all I get following the splash screen is a blank window with a tooltips dialog box.

I tried uninstalling LW Pro and Java and reinstalling LW Basic, but with the same end result. Another thread mentioned having Universe and Multiverse enabled in the update repositories, and this has been verified.

Has anyone succeeded in getting LW 4.14.8, either Pro or Basic, to run correctly on Ubuntu 7.04?

(My email to the LW Pro support desk yielded no reply beyond the "we'll respond to you shortly" automated response, which seems to be par for the course.)

Are you by chance running Compiz or Beryl? If so, this is a bug having to do with Java.

Try launching LW using this:
Code:

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 limewire

Ahah! I think you've nailed it. The XLIB_SKIP... variable didn't help, but I noted that 'compiz' and 'compiz.bin' processes were running. I killed both of them, following which entering 'limewire' at the command prompt started LimeWire Pro working correctly.

(All the window decorations disappeared when I killed Compiz, but they hadn't been working correctly either, even before installing LimeWire.)

The installed Java version is 1.5.0_11. Would the Compiz problem be resolved by updating Java to a later version?

Thanks for your help.

You just need to turn off desktop effect under appearance

Thanks people

Been trying for hours to get Limewire to do something other than display a blank window. Thought it was something to do with port restrictions or other complex matter. Who would have thought of turning off the Gnome desktop effects? Obviously someone with more knowledge about Ubuntu than I have.

Thanks so much for this piece of advice. Perhaps it should be made sticky until the bug(s) are fixed.

tabatharyann:

Your post to this topic is really off topic. You will probably get more (and better)results if you start a new thread with your question.

From my limited knowledge, my suggestions would be to:
1.If you burn both CDs and DVDs make sure that you have got the right setting in your burner.

2. Make sure that the disk is closed. Some players will not play a disk that has been burned with the idea adding to it at a later time.

2. If the settings are right, try another burn at a slower speed.

As I say, a new thread with a better title will undoubtedly get you more answers from people who are more knowledgeable than I. Only people who are subscribed to this thread have probably paid any attention to it.
