V1.20 has Advertising and it SUCKS

DO NOT USE version 1.20 unless you have no other choice - it has ADVERTISING BUILT IN AND YOU CANNOT TURN IT OFF AND IT F***ING SUCKS.

Ironman July 7th, 2002 01:46 PM

I see someone let loose the unregistered troll again.

I have never seen an ad on XoloX version 1.20 nor had any other problems with it. So disreguard the unregistered troll's comments.

davegrave July 7th, 2002 10:29 PM

Hey Ironman I think he means the adverts/banners you see when viewing the discussion boards, as well the full page ones that occassionally appear when you hit a hyperlink. I've seen some adverts a couple of times when trying to view hyperlinks. For me though its no big deal a few adverts here and there doesn't hurt once in awhile, I just ignore the stuff :p

davegrave July 7th, 2002 10:40 PM

btw, this is how XoloX supports itself and stays alive with the few adverts/banners it displays. I now there is a way of elinimating the adverts/banners if you understand what your Windows Host File function can do ;)

dude calm down its okay! unless you personally are a millionare, and can pay out of pocket for xolox's development, i am sorry to say that you have no say whether or not ads will run.

also, instead of out-right complaining and using foul language to get your point across, try asking a simple question. youll find it much more productive in the long run.

KayaMan July 8th, 2002 10:00 AM

just fyi: the 'full' page adverts you get from pages *OUTSIDE* the xolox site are usually just a normal pop-up's the XoloX browser catches and makes a new tab within xolox. Its actually better for surfing the web ( including this forum) the way it catches the popups since they are easier to close

KayDee July 11th, 2002 10:26 PM

OMG, it has ads? You mean those little flashy things way up in the corner? Hmmm, I hadn't thought about them much.

The way I figure (bring on the hate mail...) is Xolox not only rocks, it's free, the music sharing is free, and I get to respond to stupid posts like this just for FUN! So, not only have I registered my Xolox for free, saving bucks, and not spent a ton of money on new CD's (yet), I get to open my big ol' mouth without getting my *** kicked in person.

Seems perfect to me :p

Well, you gotta love the ones who are blinded from reality. Programs cost money -- meaning, either 1. Users buy the program or 2. The program is supported by ads. Which is better?

XoloX's ads are non-intrusive and arent based on third party programs.

evilmegaman July 12th, 2002 08:50 AM

Well advertising yourself is kinda stupid. What if this site had a whole bunch of gnutellaforum banners? That would be stupid:P:rolleyes:

Gamer July 12th, 2002 12:51 PM

Gnutellaforums has banner ads, scroll up some time.. The xolox "ads" are just placeholders.

Unregistered July 17th, 2002 12:11 PM

Dear Moron,
P*ss off to another site then you ungrateful person you!

Unregistered July 21st, 2002 05:03 PM

Banner ads are one thing..

But pop ups are where many people stop ignoring or buying.. they simply stop using. I hope the Xoloz crew gets a clue on this subject.

Worth the sacrifice

I see a single popup ad whenever I start up Xolox, but you know what, I've become such a fan of Xolox and supporter of our community that a single popup ad isn't going to bother me. There are other programs that do much worse, I've used programs that have so much adware and spyware and cookies that it can take months (next to a quick format of the harddrive) to get rid of it all. Xolox is the first p2p program that I've ever given my full trust in and I know they have my interested in mind. I mean jeez, its just a single pop up and after closing it once I never see it again unless I close and reload the program.

If any of you don't like ads than I challenge you to make a p2p program COMPLETELY FREE without a SINGLE means of supporting yourself from the program without using ads, as reliable and useful as Xolox is. Welcome to the real world. Put up or shut up. Xolox rocks :)

I'm a bit of an "ad-Clicker." I like those scratch and win ads and punch the monkey and find the ball and hit the target ads. They're great!:D Sorry ad haters....I love em!

I'm sorry if I offended you.I just meant pop-ups saying : "Come to Gnutellaforums! It's a great place for Gnutella Fans!" That would be pointless to have if it was on gnutellaforums.Maybe you guys understand now.I'm just a loser from frisco.:D

Unregistered July 22nd, 2002 05:06 AM

i doubt team xolox wants their lusers finding out about all the better clients like shareaza and Ares

Thumbs Mostly Up

I've been keen on Xolox for a long time. I don't mind the banner ad in the top-right, but I do protest loudly that I get popups now with 1.20 / 1.21 -- yes, a separate window. And they build up if you don't shut 'em down. Please listen, ppl at Xolox!

Also the quality of the network has degraded significantly over the past 3-6 months. Probably this is because ppl are just not sharing stuff -- I understand it's a Gnutella protocol issue and not Xolox-specific, but maybe if you requested that ppl share more in a more visible way, then they would. Or maybe that's wishful thinking!

Overall, I'll give Xolox 1.21 a 7/10. Which is down from the 9/10 I would have given the old version just under a year ago.

Dishonesty

I understand that linking to advertising keeps Xolox free. However, like others I detest the pop-under windows. They would be far less problematic as tabs within Xolox. This is an annoying trend as even Yahoo has stooped to pop-under windows. I think Xolox should offer a "pro" version for a $20 or $30 registration fee to eliminate the banner ads AND the pop-under windows completely.

Worse yet, I believe that Xolox is responsible for or at least participating in the rash of Porn Bombs out there (see my post in the "WARNING (Porn Bombs) *.zip, *.rar, *.asf thread - http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=13920). I wouldn't be surprised if there are actually only 5 files out there and that the Xolox client itself is "translating" the filenames on your own machine to match just about any search you do. This is just out and out dishonest, particularly since it says right on the front page "We make the following promise to you: XoloX contains No spyware, no sneakware, no hijackware. " I would classify these bombs as a virus. Xolox is the best Gnutella client I've yet used. I would hate to forced to look elsewhere for a client if this trend continues.

Xolox is crap

Xolox is crap, banners are everywhere, the buttons are too big can't make them small to increase search/download windows and no search refinements. Actually, is it possible to use 1.12 again? I've got it somewhere on CDR, cracked but can't be bothered to dig it out again... 1.12 was the best! No more Xolox for me anyway... I hate ads, I don't care if I'm a freeloader, Gnucleus lets me be one... greedness in the Xolox team will fail them soon. Not happy with only one banner...

V1.20 has advertising and it sucks #2

Sorry, Ironman, I have to agree with our unregistered friend, here. I have never had a problem with V1.20 until just recently when this stupid casino ad keeps popping up. if you try to close it, xolox gets the bug message and restarts. Then it pops back up again in about 5 minutes or so. i've pulled every trick out of my dirty little black book, but it keeps coming back.
