Also do not download!!

Type in the name of any singer, and within seconds there will be (artists name).zip as a file to download, in my case pete_krebs.zip, after unzipping a file was put onto my HD in C:\windows\dialler called 'sex finder', also a shortcut appeared. i deleted shortcut but have been told 'access denied' when trying to delete from root directory. How can i get rid of this ? if anybody has any 'safe' guesses, please reply,,
thanx

somtimes problem files can be delated by searching for them using start.search for files .
when file that you want to delete is found drag it by holding L/H mouse button down drag and drop file into the recycle bin icon on desktop .then empty Recycle Bin.
this has worked for me many times as i have had same problem,

hope it helps

if you want music, then when you want to put audio as the type, then you should not even get .zip or the other types.

antihedron July 23rd, 2002 11:21 AM

mp3s usally shouldn't be zipped in the first place because they are already compressed and compressing them usually has little effect

Most legit zip files are going to be long. Short zip files are ad bombs which will hijack you to a porn site. Beware of files that start with !!! or short zip files. It is best to search for music files by audio only setting. You will find music that you want most of the time unless some S.O.B. has mislabeled the file.

I have found this dialer with many files as:

*.zip with 175,900 bytes
*.rar with 167,449 bytes

Look at any search result, and you will see these files there.

This is were business, screws it up for a profit.

It would be nice if each user could rate a downloaded file,(and that one time per user rating result, could be averaged) for a overall rating for others to view.
(and if to many negitives; the file would eventaualy drop from circulation)

I like this service, and I'll live with the one pop-up avert.

Just my opinon, DeReK

I have found an unusual concentration of hosts carrying files matching those specific file sizes and types myself. I have found such files even when searching for rare files. There must be alot of people who are hosting these files on purpose under many different file names.

I dont think it is adware because it comes up under other Gnutella servants as well.

antihedron July 28th, 2002 10:03 AM

Some people were having troble with that. Note I never bothered to get myself infected.

antihedron July 29th, 2002 03:40 PM

I usually go by about 1M for each minute of mp3

DillyMan August 1st, 2002 02:13 PM

Those files:

!!!(something).zip
(Your Exact Search Query).asf

Etc.

They are gnutella viruses. When executed, they reside on your PC and use you gnutella client software to respond to incoming search queries (from other users). The virus creates the file with the appropriate name contain a copy of itself and maybe some "padding" to vary the size and will have a name ressembling the file you are searching for.

Check www.antivirus.com and search for "gnutella" or ".zip" or ".asf" and read the results.
