Danger Virus' & Trojans My system is attacked daily. So far attacked by 1"Remote Grab Trojan"2"Netspy Trojan"3"Ultors Trojan"and4"The Thing" Over twenty incidences. Do not use this service without uptodated virus protection. Scan regularly and if you have been downloading without virus protection, you ARE INFECTED !!! Go to Symantec for a free scan and see for yourself !!! |

you need also a good firewall... Morgwen |
Ummm... I've only had ONE run-in with a virus, and that was years ago when I stupidly used some school computer to work on a little qbasic project and got my floppy disk infected with Empire.Monkey.B (and, subsequently, my computer.) I download things off the internet from trusted sites, I keep my virus defs up to date and occasionally scan my system, but don't leave any active scanning crap running. I have no firewall, and I never have any problems. Just because soemone portscans your system LOOKING for trojans, doesn't mean you're infected. They are either 1) scanning entire IP ranges which you happen to be a part, or 2) using a modified gnutella client to harvest IP's to target. |

I cannot agree... Without a fw in the internet is like flying without a plane! Especially for worm and trojans, a good protection... No active scanning no fw??? You have to scan your system almost daily and search for trojans! You never had any problems?!? It was just luck - i hope you have no important dates one your HD... Morgwen |
virus / firewall I've been on the internet since 1996 and in that entire time I have been hit by a virus of some kind or another only 3-5 times. And as far as I know my computer was hacked into only around two times, but that was before I started running a firewall. I highly suggest that you run a virus background scanner AND a firewall (Not blackice though, yuck!). You need this type of protection even more on a connection like cable, dsl, or any that are always on. If you're using a modem, you're not as badly targeted and probably could get by with just a manual virus scan on occasion. Whether you run virus-firewall software or not, you should ALWAYS keep your operating system as up to date as possible! Anyway, that's just my two cents. |
My humble opinion on Virus: If you download files any where from the Internet especially from a file sharing program it is ESENTIAL to have a Virus program and to keep the virus signatures up to date. Also a Firewall program is equally ESENTIAL. I use ZoneAlarm a free firewall program which works superb for me. It can be obtained at "http://www.zonelabs.com/index.html" I use InoculateIT an excellent virus program which is no longer free but works well and does not interfere with other programs as readily as McAufee. It can be set to virus scan downloads automatically. It caught a Virus file for me and cleaned it and deleted it. In any event it is a MUST to also Virus Scan any file after you download and before you open it. InoculateIT can be obtained at: "http://antivirus.cai.com/" Anyone who does not use a Virus and Firewall program and downloads files is at GREAT RISK. |
I too have only had one virus experience like the seeker and it too dealt with using a shared computer at a school. I also believe in using a a good virus scanner with auto protect enabled (I run Norton 2000). I ran a firewall for about a week, but i didnt like the way it worked, so i burned it...er, uninstalled it. If anyone knows of a good firewall that is easy to set up, let me know. |
firewall Easy, free, good firewall here: www.tinysoftware.com I don't suggest you use ZoneAlarm, it's not a very well made firewall IMHO. |
P2P filesharing + No Firewall + No Antivirus = Sure Problem. Even if you're not running a P2P client: If you're dloading and you ain't got no antivirus, you're asking for troubles. Bottom Line: Kaspersky AVP Platinum... never leave home without it!! PS: Just yesterday this baby caught a virus in a progiie I was dloding from a well known cracks source... it was infected with the I.WORM.MAGISTR, no less! :) Have Phun. |
same here Just found a virus in a Keygen for MP3 CD-Maker. Why a warez site would knowingly do this and scare off people that are on their side, makes no sense. |
Well, i heard that McAfee has a good firewalling service. But it is not free... |

Common Sense Ignore scans... if you get less than 100 an hour you aren't being targetted, I have noticed recently a higher number of 137-9 scans (sigh) so there is a new post on some AOL L337 h4xor page labelled "G|\|OO73114 K|!3|\|75 345! /\/\337" Euurgh I hate Leet that shows that by running a modified client it will set a job lot of wi***b scripts running Scan 139, look for open share, String length password confirmation bug, the usual, who cares, what are they going to find, probably the most illegal or incriminating files on your pooty are those that you are sharing I Have AV software not on auto protect (sorry my CPU has better things to waste cycles on) any files I DL are manually scanned if an at risk Group Exes Archives etc (gonna have to add .asf to this list if people keep arseing around with the scripting features) although I have a firewall it isn't used when sharing (mostly cause xolox seems to hate it) I use ZA keeps the kiddies out (99.99999 % of all hack attempts are the P433r M3 1337 h4x0r type, that wouldn't know an IP address if it was traced to thier dial up node, trust me I work for an ISP, most of the time all the IS guys have to do is monitor astalavista for new exploit posts and the script kiddy R00/\/\z for new (aka renamed) scripts, plant a few honey traps and most are stopped at our end of things, if you want security run smoothwall or get a firebox, if like me security is important but not worth shelling 3-8k on a proper hardware solution, stay off the road and beware of the moon... hang on I mean scan reasonably regularly, back up data (Duh I guess you all do that anyway a HDD or OS Failure is far more likely than a serious hack attempt) and keep REALLY sensetive data off net, Floppy Zip CD PGP encrypted whatever, I have worked for over 23 companies, just implementing basic Common sense security, I have found this more efficient than letting the non technically literate put faith in something they don't understand, just test it ask your boss (unless you work for a tech company) which he believes would provide better security port blocking or NAT, or a virus checker (bet he says virus checker (that hasn't been updated for 18 months). now I know that we are posting to a forum on technical discussion, and most of the regular posters have worked out how to register and therefore qualify immediately as powerusers, but come on there is healthy paranoia and obsession, Run ZA or Tiny or whatever when you need to, and Keep autoprotect on if your processor has nothing better to do, otherwise, scan when you want to, back up important stuff, and keep your private life off the net, Oh and DON'T SHARE YOUR ENTIRE DRIVE... and remember never eat yellow snow, |
