What now? What next?

First of All, I want to say "No, thanks to YOU!" - XoloX is one of the best Gnutella clients I know, (easy to use, and what not. You've probably read this a few hundred times ;-) and thinking of it to not start the network tomorrow makes me already miss it...

But just after I finished reading the above message, a few questions popped up in my mind...

First of all, if a filesharing... uh... "facility" had to "die", it didn't really die. It just "dodged". Public MP3 FTP servers became private, with a personal authentification over IRC, ICQ, etc. Napster led to OpenNap and the likes, and even a 100% filtered Audiogalaxy Database would still be usefull in saving you hours of XoloX' continous search. (As long as it's still accessable, that is...)

So, Here's question #1: Could you please publish the source? I'd bet there'll be someone with enough courage and financial sources to continue development.

Second thing I'd like to know is: Will XoloX still work later when I enter a custom Gnutellahost? I mean, this is a Gnutella client, after all...

If support is stopped for the xolox client, does this mean that access to the gnutella network through xolox will be stopped? Will I still be able to use xolox to search and download from the network? Anyone know?

So I can say only thank you mvoosten, thank you pasman and thank you boynamedsue for such a great client and for every second I was allowed to use it...

You showed Vinnie and the rest of Gnutella what a real client is...

aha, let's kill Gnutella...
 

... and make more leecher-freeloading tools, such as all other Gnutella clients allready are and finally bring Gnutella down to it's knees? One reason for eDonkeys not to go opensource/GPL is to protect it against freeloaders. Why do you think is FastTrack/eDonkey that fast? Gnutella should learn from them.
When the first modern Gnutella client after Xolox will come (Limewire, Phex, Peeranha?) and offers multihosted downloads without anti-freeloading (e.g. minimum upload or swarming), then Gnutella will be dead! Please learn from FastTrack/eDonkey/Xolox and improve the only open source P2P (beside Freenet)!

I have used Bearshare for awhile and more recently Limewire and very recently Xolox. Even though Bearshare lets you see more of what is going on with all it's different windows, at least older versions did, xolox (hate to see 'er go) hasn't dumped so many of my downloads as other p2p programs have. Last night I was hauling butt with xolox for awhile at around 100 kbs on one of the transfers. Iv'e never gotten bearshare or limewire to do this.
I have noticed a disturbing change i one thing in particular and I'm hoping it's just something with my computer and not the gnuttella network. I share somewhere around 4,000 files and about two months ago or so, not really sure, I would almost always have somewhere around 10 people downloading from me and this would remain consistent from a few minutes after connecting until going off. Lately, whatever I am using there is only 1 or two downloads an hour and I've also noticed that it is getting alot harder to find stuff and I'm getting fewer results from my searches. I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this too and if they know what it is.
On a final note, thanks so much to all the developers of xolox and I am so sorry to see such a good thing go.

At least it still works a little, at least for me. I did notice a significant file dropout. Now only one files downloads at a time, compared to the 4 or 5 I had enjoed before. That's probably not much anyway.

Oh well, even though it says 'this version has expired', I'm glad it still works.

I notice this too, usually around the middle of the week and on Saturday night. Here's my theory: people are too busy to share during the middle of the week and too drunk Saturday night ;-)
Overall though, my experience with Xolox has been fantastic. I'm still sharing tons of files and downloading lots of great stuff.
