where to now??

i only downloaded xolox a month ago after finally deciding to use an alternative to audiogalaxy since searches had become so complicated. i use winmx as well but i'v heard s much about other p2p filesharers - has anyone got any acurate info about whats good for who and whats not. maybe we can get a usefull thread started for those who are now left looking for an alternative.

just to get started...

winmx

- you simultaneously connect through the decentralized WinMX Peer Networking Protocol and to many networks based on the OpenNap and Napster protocols.
you can share and download any filetype and also it tracks and resumes broken transfers.
theres the ability to throttle upload and download bandwidth along with upload and download bandwidth graphs(in my view they look pretty but theres not much you can do with them-or if there is i'v yet to find out)
Per-user and over-all upload AND download queuing
Full chat capabilities including op commands
Multiple docking window interface great for hi-res and multi-monitor systems
Close program or shutdown computer (Win9x only) when transfers finish
Compatible with most LAN configurations
(soz-i got bored typing it in so i'v just copied the rest of the spec)

most importantly it contains NO SPYWARE!!!
you are also given more than enough information about the file you are downloading. if its a song you get the length, size, bitrate, frequency, the user supplying it, their type of modem, and how available it is.
the download speed, as with all these tools, varies according to lots of things but i'v found it to be generally good - not always as good as xolox could b but better than audiogalaxy

so - thats my contribution, anyone else going to add something??

Hi!

- audio galaxy contains spyware

- winMX is good but have no multiple downloads

- morpheus will be closed

- eDonkey is left

- and a new Gnutella client will be released in the next weeks...

All other clients are not worth to be mentioned with Xolox!

any possibility of a hint as to what the aproximate launch date will be, a name, and also the specs on it?

Could it be cultiv8r?

Some links you probably wouldn't find right away:

http://www.cultiv8r.com/cultiv8r/cultiv8rextension.html
http://www.cultiv8r.com/cultiv8r/connectback.html

Of course, these are from June, so things may have changed some... Oh, and if you realy want to dig, 'cause I'm not gonna do it for you: have fun.

{edit}

or maybe it's the client mentioned here...

The first alpha is finished but actually without multi download...

the first working alpha with multi should be finished in two weeks!

It is planed to release the version with:

- multi download
- auto-research
- auto-resume
- etc.

If you love Xolox you will love this new client!

Donīt expect a public beta within the next six weeks...

P.S.:

Seeker, Iamacho do you have some programming backround?
We can need some help!

First a question: Are you working on the new client?

And my answer to your question. I am currently in the beginning stages of learning C++, but I dont know if you qualify that as having any backround. and i am sure that you got a good laugh out of that one. I am sure that I wont be any help in programming, but if you think that there is anything else that I can do for you, let me know (iamnacho@hotmail.com) and I believe that The Seeker is willing to test products (as am I). Stay in touch and good luck. :)

I posted in the Rants section about being black listed by my ISP (Charter Pipeline Cable Access) for using a Gnutella client. So I will NOT be using one unless it's possible to make one that's anonymous. The only ones I know of are Guerilla and FreeNet but I can't get either of them to phuckin work.

I am pretty profficient in Qbasic, and have gotten as far as hello world in VB and C... I understand a lot of the core concepts of programming languages, but I'm not very good at object orientation yet. As for designing a P2P client, I'd need to know a lot about network protocalls and TCP/IP stacks, and that I just can't help with. Not to say that I wouldn't like to see the source, as I'm sure I could learn a lot from it, but I don't think I could contribute too much, and certainly shouldn't be assigned a programming position on a team.

I can, however, test the program on my machines and have a number of versions of windows I could install for testing purposes. You can judge my usefulness in that catagory by looking through my posts on this forum.

Hope it helps, Moak :)
