Shareaza firewall problem Greetings. I have a brand new pc with Vista (of course, no choice anymore). I installed Shareaza and it always gives me the message that it found a router or firewall. As far as I know, I have disabled all firewalls and I also forwarded the port that Shareaza wanted. Does anyone know of anything else I can try? Thank You! |
Make sure you're not firewalled with a test: Shareaza Connection Test - Atomo64 Copy and paste the results in too here. |
Here is the response from the test Results TCP: The TCP connection has timed out. This can be due to a stealth firewall or router that has not been configured properly for Shareaza. UDP: No answer has been received from your client. This can have various reasons, like that your firewall or router isn't properly configured for Shareaza, or Shareaza is not running on this port, or not connecting to the networks. At least one problem has been detected and you probably have to configure your firewall or router for Shareaza. If you need help with configuring your firewall or router, visit this page on the wiki: FAQ: Routers/Firewalls. Or search on the wiki: However, my router was configured to open the port for Shareaza. Obviously, there is something else going on. Any ideas? |
What's your router, ISP, firewall and OS? |
My ISP is Road Runner. I have 2 computers that run Shareaza; a very old one that I just use for Shareaza. That computer runs with Windows XP without Service Pack 2. I forwarded the port in the router and Shareaza does not detect a firewall. My new pc (laptop) has Windows Vista. I am hoping to use the laptop for Shareaza and get rid of the old one. The laptop is the one I am having problems with. I do not have a firewall since I have the router. I also disabled the Windows firewall. My router is a "Netgear". I really appreciate your help. You are very kind! |
the last time I had severe UDP problems I just ended up reformatting...that solved the problem...never did figure out what was wacked, but I did spend a good deal of time trying to...in the end its many times quicker to just start all over again! |

I have the same problem in that when I start up Shareaza I get the warning that i have a firewall. But I did the test you suggested above and everything comes back fine and I also made sure I configured winXPsp2 and Mcafee firewalls to allow access. So I don't understand why there is a firewall warning unless it does that automatically whenever there is a firewall?? |
What's your ISP? |
Rogers cable. ( Canada) |
I'm having a similar problem. I installed Service Pack 2 so I'd be on the same page as everyone else, even though ive been reading about it conflicting with shareaza. But it gave me a new insight into the problem: Every other internet program i run, Windows firewall asks me if I want to block it or not. But not for shareaza. So apparently it isn't even getting as far as my computer's own internal security, let alone my router or my ISP. It should also be noted that I have no problem sending or receiving data through any other applications. So I really doubt it has anything whatsoever to do with my router, my ISP, or even windows security. |
ozzyautl Well hello lucky for you guys i have stumbled across this page i have the way what you have to do to fix this problem the only reason why i know is i had the same problem what you have to do is go into your control panel and click on internet firewall and then unclick the exception under firwall setting judt trun your firewall off for now then you have to click shareaza and check the box udp and put in there shareaza then under port you have to put 6346 make sure you do that twice for udp and the other one you shuld have 3 shareazas in your firewall execption when you all done well good luck your firewall thing should go away and dont forget to rebbot your after your done good bye |
please let me know if this works? |
that didn't work Ozzie;;that fix didn't change anything here,,still have the firewall....getting very frustrated here....... |
need to know does anyone really know what their doing here,,or is it all abunch of people trying to pretend they know what they are doing,,,I have spent hours reading all these fixes and they generally don't work,,usually makes the problem worse. Might just have to start renting ****ing movies...less ****ing stress |

I didn't actually change anything. So I have no idea. |
Ozzie;;I tried what you suggested and it didn't work,,,you can't put two 6346 udp in the same port number. I tried 15 times and still the firewall warning came up,,,I'm thinking that you really don't know what your talking about...so unless you sure that something really works....quit wasting my time |
frizzer;;when you said you checked your xp service pak,,,what did you do to check it?,,and how can i check mine,,,thanks,,,, |

What your above comment certainly implies is that the one wasting time in this case is ozzyautl. There was no reference made to suggest attempting to run 2 or more clients on the same port... The comment referred only to setting up a firewall. You did not read the post correctly. Moving right along, here... Your follow-up post... Quote:
So, you may benefit from a lot longer fuse, a lot less hairy trigger and maybe even a trainer bra for your jaw. :w00t: That way you may learn more, faster and maybe even meet some friends. Now, let's all be nice and appreciate the others who wish to try and help, OK ? |
feel free to offer your help,,,I snuffed my fuse |

You will be able to see if your firewall is enabled and you can manage it (make exceptions) from there. Hope this helps. |
OK, moving along here as urs suggests... This may help, or may not.. whatever. This only works if you're having trouble getting connected to G1 :) I connect fine with G2.. but..sometimes when I've not been on the network for a while, I get the firewall warning simply because G1 hasn't connected :( Shareaza reports it as a firewall problem, but... Pssst... it's not... Your G1 Host Cache is empty.. so...Hit F9, right-click one of your GWebCache's, then hit F8.. check to see if you get any results in the host cache window. Try a few if you don't get any results ;) If you do get results, disconnect, then reconnect, and you should get G1 Ultrapeers :) |
Hi Kath, I dig your Sig line.... ;-) |
any updates on firewall problem,, I haven't been here for awhile. Also,,is there a better version(new) of shareaza out yet? |
v2.4.0.0 but install it with a clean install... uninstall the version before and then install the new one. an the firewall issue... first: try configurating everything with a different port (Shareaza, router, firewall, NAT)Use this guides to config your LAN devices and computer(s). Note that if there are more than one computer sharing the same internet gateway they all need to use different ports for Shareaza. Also try if disabling ALL security applications changes sth on the result of the test. |
"Shareaza has detected that you are behind a NAT router or firewall..." Hi, I cannot get rid of the above message when I start Shareaza. I am running Windows VISTA. I have turned off Windows Firewall, and turned off the Norton firewall trial version that came with the computer. When I run the Shareaza Connection Test, it fails with this message: "TCP: The TCP connection has been refused, the port is closed." and "UDP: No answer has been received from your client." I have setup a static IP on my computer and setup port forwarding on my Linksys wireless router for the default Shareaza port 6346. I also tried changing the Shareaza port to a higher number (16346) and setting up port forwarding again for this port. Shareaza DOES connect to G1, G2, and eDonkey, but whenever I try to download something it just gets stuck in "pending" status. This occurred even for something that had 647 sources. My ISP is Earthlink. I do not believe that I had this problem before I started using wireless, although I am not 100% sure. I do know that I was able to download through Shareaza when I was connected directly to DSL, but I am not sure if I had the "firewall" message before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.:) |
Did you set within ShareAza that you are using port forwarding? :) Make sure no other programs are using the same port because routers will reserve a single port per program & computer (internal ip address). ;) |
Thank you for the quick reply, Lord of the Rings. How would I set within Shareaza that I am using port forwarding? The only thing I did within Shareaza is first I left the default port as "6346", and when that didn't work I tried changing it to "16346". Of course, I restarted Shareaza each time I made changes. I am pretty sure no other programs are using the same ports since I have tried two different ports, but how would I find this out for sure? Shareaza is the only program I set up port forwarding for on my router. Also, in case you're wondering, I am running the latest Shareza, 2.4 (not the fake one). Thanks again. |
You don't have to set it within Shareaza. It has to be done in the router (and/or NAT/modem) and in your respective firewall (if you own one). You will see that it worked once you pass the connection test. If you have precise questions on how to do that, ask! mfg Old |
Old Death - Thanks for the answer. I already did set the port forwarding in my wireless router. Apparently it didn't work, since I never pass the connection test. I followed the instructions from the Shareaza Wiki, and the PortForward.org site referenced therein, which contained instructions tailored to my router, a Linksys WRT54G2. I went to the Applications & Gaming section and under Port Range Forward entered Start port 16346 To port 16346 (I also tried port 6346), which is the port I set in Shareaza, and set Protocol to Both. I entered the static ip address which I set in Network connections and verified via ipconfig (I also tried two different IP addresses in case there was some issue with that), and I checked the Enable box. Then I clicked Save Settings, and it says settings successfully saved. I turned off Windows Firewall and Norton Firewall, and I don't believe I have any other. Could this have something to do with settings on my DSL Modem (ZyXEL P-600)? Anyway, Shareaza keeps giving me that firewall warning and I always fail the connection test, but it seems to be downloading ok now. So I guess it's a mystery of little significance now. |
The problem comes probably from your modem. I suppose your internet cable goes first in the modem and then from the modem to your router and from there to your computer? In this case, you will have to forward the traffic from your modem first to your router and from your router to your computer. And: no, this is not of little significance, since it will prevent you from downloading faster than ~60% of the max speed (and many downloads will not start at all)... |

Someone found a fix, however is not recommended for everyone to try since playing around with firmware could render your router inoperable if mistakes made; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/196843-post8.html BTW when you did the ShareAza port test, did you have ShareAza open? Best to have it open at that time of doing the test. :) Oh .. and also btw ... Norton & Windows firewall are reknown firewall clashers. They should not be both activated at same time. This results in 'less security' not more, plus other problematic issues. ;) |
OldDeath - You solved it! I had to also set up port forwarding on my DSL modem to my wireless router IP address, in addition to the port forwarding from my wireless router to my computer IP. Perhaps someone should make this clearer in the Shareaza FirewallGuide Wiki, because I would never have figured this out from there and I can't imagine my situation (a DSL modem with a wireless router) is uncommon. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help! |
Lord of the Rings - thanks for your help too. :) I will check for firmware updates on the Linksys router to see if that can improve performance. Yes, Shareaza was open at the time of the connection tests. But I'm sure these ideas will help someone else reading this thread later. Thanks for the tip on the firewall clashers too. I only plan to use Windows Firewall when the Norton firewall free trial runs out. Until then, it stays off. :D |
I am having firewall and port recognition problems with Shareaza on a Mac using VMWare 4.1.3. THe Mac is running OSX 10.7.4. I have no other firewall or port problems with any other software on the VM environment, only Shareaza. It is not my ISP, not my Router, and not the windows 7 security feature within VM. ANy other suggestions? |
What problems are you experiencing in detail? What results does the connection test give you? |
I get a lowID from E-Monkey and it tells me I can not get connection downloads. Firewall issues |
Are you using Shareaza? Are you passing the connection test (see help menu)? |
