Sharetastic - What do you know about it?

Hi,
I've installed Sharetastic and found it to be very similar' almost identical, to shareaza.
Can you explain the similarities and the differences?

OldDeath June 22nd, 2009 05:35 AM

Where did you get it from?
You might want to know that most of these programs that are 'very similar to Shareaza', are only copies of Shareazas code and contain backdoor programs, virusses, trojan horses etc. Therefore, it is not advisary to run any Shareaza mod (except for Shareazaplus, which is an official and 100% clean mod) if you are not able to verify it being clean of such rubbish inside.

I don't remeber where I got it from, but a possible source is:Sharetastic - GoForSharing

It's most probably based on the shareaza code.

As to malware, its documentation states explicitly: "NOTE: Sharetastic does NOT include spyware and adware!".

So, the puzzle stays unsolved. I have very good experience with shareaza and keep using it, but, still, am puzzled about this newly made kin.

Sorry, but I distrust this website. They host multiple applications that seem (except for some of their graphics) to be copies of famous and whidely used p2P clients. If there had been only one single application, it would have been OK, but the manpower to maintain several of these applications is too big for the site to serve a 'good' purpose. Also, it is not possible to download their source code (at least I didn't find it in a quick search), which is clearly a violation of the licenses of the applications used as a basis of their 'premium programs'.

Greetings,
OldDeath

PS.:
Are there any features in that application that are not present within Shareaza?
Have you checked which registry keys it uses to store its settings? (Is the key named by chance "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Shareaza\"?)

Agree with the OldDeath her,it seem's like another modified clone of Shareaza, and in another words offspring from its code...They do not give enny source code for it,so they violation of the licenses enny way so fare! They web site statment:"NOTE: Sharetastic does NOT include spyware and adware!". Are useless crap statment would i say, what about Kazaa,Morpheus,Shareaza Lite from Sharing.biz,eDonkey for name of few...Think two time before you installing application like this, before you know it your pc is riddled with spy/adware,viruses,trojan and so one!
I have cleaned out so many application like this, and its hard to get ridd of it after you have the clean files....:w00t:Thats way i have a pc for thats purpose only! And its not feeling well i guess right now....Just be careful thats all!And support the real deal, insted of modified clones like this one!:xeri_ok1ani:

Her is my view on this application!I can confirme the reg key it uses,is this one: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Shareaza\ And the installer comes bundled in with Ask Toolbar, its optional-but still not good....I have inspected the main exe file and the code so far look clean....Its based or modified from Shareaza 2.4.0.0 source code!Or it could be a revers engineering of Shareaza 2.4.0.0 directly also! But i have to study the software littel bit moore-then we see!!!:rolleyes_2:

I found no new features, even though connection seemed somewhat smoother than with shareaza.
As to the registry, no, the application has its own key, which I add as an attachment.

See my reply above. The reg specifies explicitly its name.

File_Girl71 July 1st, 2009 05:16 AM

Yes we are partly right and partly wrong both of us,but i also know its using both reg keys...Its leving behind Shareaza reg keys too,and i can tell you i didn't install Shareaza after i reformated my hard drive last time....But i dosen't matter because its build on Shareaza code 2.4.0.0 enny ways....I have that code before on my computer, and i did littel bitt revers engineering on it,and its shows clearly Shareaza 2.4.0.0 code....They simply strip down the code, and remove things like media player and few other things....And i found this software verry unstable, and they bundled it up with Ask toolbar...They allready break the promise NO Adware and No Spyware include policy....All toolbars comes with p2p software is spyware bye nature,it sends back user statestic and they generate popups advertisment based up on what people search for, when they use the toolbar...Now this is probably not the worst kind, this is how theire keep the software free....But the code and the core as i see it is clean and the are no problem to use this software,if you like it you can use it...But the real Shareaza is fare moore better then this one in over all performance....:xeri_ok1ani:I hear that this month,Shareaza was tried HIJACKED once moore time....When this gona stop!!!:w00t:

lol... This is exactly what I thought... Except for the name "Shareastic", everything is exactly as the settings in the original Shareaza ;) All settings names are exactly the same as those in Shareaza.
