Frequent Lockups

I am frustrated with the frequent lockups I get with v 1.4 and earlier version. I have build 453. I rarely get 10 minutes of time before it locks up. I usually have a browser and a music player open, but I'm not sure that has an effect.

My OS is Win ME, which sounds problematic based on other comments. Any solutions? Should I try some other program?
