I was curious if a note of the top searches could be kept and posted somewhere, or even added as a part of the new Xolox. I have gigs of stuff I like to share but due to space I don't keep it on my computer. If there were a specific list of searches that users were looking for I could throw it on my computer. Various hard to find music, or movs, etc. Just an idea.

Me too, just like Wolf, can only keep on my hard drives a small fraction of what I have to share (programs). What would be useful is a page/site of requests, especially for rare hard to find stuff (the two links given by "X_man" and "Unregistered" point to pages listing top searches and actual real time searches going on, which is something entirely different of what I'm talking about).

That way, people like me, Wolf and others having a lot of stuff to share could go there to see what people are looking for but have trouble finding, and if we have it, we could then put it temporarily on our hard drives.

To be useful, the list would have to be maintained somehow. Ideally, the people having put the requests would be able to delete them once they got what they requested, so the "sharers" could delete the stuff from the hard drive.

What do you think? Could this be the next step in file sharing?

This is a nice change

People on fasttrack clients generally avoid sharing, nice to have people with problems with too much to share due to space constraints =)

I share 90gb myself, mainly on my fileserver.. Know the feeling of not having available space.

As far as that list - People tend to go for newer things, IE: new movies, new apps, etc.

Thanks for the info guys. For the moment I'm switching cds in my cd-roms to allow more sharing. I think I've got 10 gigs of movs, music, pictures etc. I had another search question. I have a lot of misc stuff I share, pictures music, movs, etc and unless someone is looking for a specific picture or file, it would be hard to find. I throw all my files to share under a directory "share" and each tend to have their own subdirectory, ie, "anime" "techno". How about directory searches?

I try to add a title into the file so someone can find a song or movie or picture but since I have so much I can't rename an anime picture such as nrt3, nrt4 ~nrt600. Also, I know a lot of people add so many names in there files sometimes the file name can be a paragraph long just so its gets a hit. I typically delete all that so it has a proper filename. Directory searching would be less painful and could allow more hits. Any ideas? Sorry if this post is a bit long. Thanks

If you need to rename every file in a directory to some specific numbered format I'm willing to write a program for you

Gamer,

Thank you for your offer to help, I appreciate it. What I'm looking for actually is to be able to have said files, like nrt1, nrt2, something simple like, "anime nrt1.jpg, anime nrt2.jpg" so people searching for anime pics for example could find them. I have thousands of well drawn pics for example that I would like to share with everyone but don't have the time to rename each one for appropriate hits, so I put them all under one subdirectory for my reference. I tend to be obssessed with having clean properly named files, it drives me crazy to see a file that says,
"nrt1-jpeganimepicmp3mpegmovavibritneyspears.jpg.jpg.jpg " for download, and its got a score of 20 so there are at least 20 people who can't be bothered to remove the paragraph long name spam. It might well be a pic I may appreciate but I wont download it due to the filename spam. I guess I'm looking for something a little cleaner and easier to download so I really know what I'm downloading.

I'll make you a program for it.

Gamer June 9th, 2002 01:42 AM

Here it is =)

forgot to mention - You need vb6 runtime to use this program, if you dont have it, look for Visual Basic 6 SP 5 Runtime Redistribution Pack on Microsoft's site.
