Low resources with Zone Alarm

I have been having a problem using Xolox while Zone Alarm is running. My puter's resources always shoot to a "Dangerously low level" and everthing virtually freezes. If I wait long enough I can sometimes shut down ZA and everthing works fine. Not running ZA works the best of course. I have tried setting ZA security levels to low and/or medium, turned off logging of alarms, made sure access to Xolox is granted, etc. - no luck

Anyone have similar probs? solutions? (other than don't use ZA)

System is:
Mobo - ASUS A7V266
CPU - AMD thunderbird 900 @1008Mhz
Micron Ram 256mb
Graphics - Geforce256 pro
IBM HD 30G
