There is also the chance that you downloaded a hoax file. I have encountered files in the past that did not play on any of the various players or I have and when opened in Sound Forge were found to have nothing in them. There have been files that were either just silence or loops or hiss pops etc.. Outwardly these files appear as you would expect in name and size but they are simply hoaxes.
