I downloaded hostlists.txt. The info showed "network ok" for a few minutes then went back to "Connecting to the Gnutella network" and stayed there. Any got any ideas?

That means that you were connected, but some (or all) of the hosts Xolox was connected to disconnected. I belive you may just have to wait that out. If you have a firewall it can take several minuets to connect.
