avi - class not registered?

I am running win98se.
windows media player 9
real player 10

I have downloaded quite a few .avi's but
windows media player cannot open them, claiming

"class not registered".

under the 'web help' tab i get linked to a microsoft page that
is no longer maintained. great.

i searched some forums, but none are very explicit on what seems
to be the cause of this error message. some suggest it is "codecs", but does win media player not automatically download the codec? (this is what i told it to do under 'options').
others suggest that the avi file can be registered manually under the start/run function with the regsvr32 + filename command.
this did not work for me.

please, someone, advise me on the solution, or where to look.
best,

Windows Media Player tries to download the codecs, but I remember only ONE time that the player really found the right one... download the codecs pacs the links you will find here in this section.

codecs pacs?

thank you Morgwen.

what do you mean by

"download the codecs pacs (<- what are pacs?) the links you will find here in this section."

are 'pacs' = packets? i understand that users are usually advised against installing bundled codecs re: system failure et al.
why does microsoft not make the codecs available?
is divx 5 the codec most likely missing? is there spy-ware related drama with their free download?

thanks for replying,

I mean you should download these bundles:

Perhaps you need more, but these are the most common.

Never heard that anybody had problems after installing them (including me).

Good question. I guess it has something to do with license agreements, or Bill Gates wants to play Monopoly and force the people to use his crap... but I really donīt know.

The last time I checked the links, they the programs were clean. To be sure you can download ad-aware and check it after installing:

divx5

thanx again.
i installed the divX5 bundle free of charge
via this website

www.xvidmovies.com
and now the .avi files play ok.
i also ran ad aware a number of times,
and hijack this as well, just to make sure
that no spyware arrived in the bundle. it all appears
clean as far as i can tell from the log.

browsing all sorts of help pages + forums this afternoon i
really did read, a number of times, of the divx codec being
bundled with spyware. whether there is any truth to that matter
or not...
