Nasty habit but they almost all seem to do it !!!
Not the one I know... they normally show you a list of files which they support and ask you which one they should open in future - ok they are checked by default but its no problem to uncheck them. I remember that Realplayer and Quicktime are working this way...

There is also an option to change it via Windows. Right click on the file choose "open with" NOT "open", now click on "choose programm" select the program and IMPORTANT is to check the option that the program should open this files in future - thats it.
