movies being shortened to about 40 sec

i have had it several times that a movie usually over 30,000kb are shortened after they get to about 40 sec. they will be fine but for ex. a movie that was 57,000 kb and 48sec long when 5% complete and when finished is 37sec. i am running a powerbook g4 with panther and QT.
no idea what is going on. HELP!

If I understand you right, you have downloaded movies which stop after 40 sec. but they should play longer? If you downloaded the "whole" movie, it happens that the source where you download from has only downloaded a part of the original movie, so it seems that you have the whole movie but in reality you have only a part of it. Windows Media player for example shows the time scale from the original movie, so it seems that the movie stops without a reason.

i will preview a movie when it is downloaded 5% or so. it will be a minute long. when i try to preview it when it is 10% till when it is finished, it will be 30 or so seconds, it dosent get any longer once it passes about 10%.

it will actually cut out footage i have already seen in the earlier preview

This happens, I canīt tell you why but after you have downloaded the whole movie you can see the full movie.

nope, it still only plays the shortened movie

After you downloaded 100% it plays only 5% of the movie? Are you playing the movie with the preview option? If yes try an other player like Quicktime.

Try to view the files with VLC
