Copying avi files

Can someone help me please?
I am trying to find a way to copy an avi file on to dvd-r, and I'm not sure how to do this. I'm fairly new to this, I have no idea how to burn these files or view them. have windows media player, Nero 6, and can't even view on these. Does not support format. but would like to copy to dvd so I can view on tv.
Any help greatly welcome.
Thanks

You need the right codecs to view the video with WMP:

To burn a .avi file on a DVD-R you have to convert the file in to different format, AFAIK Nero is offering plug-ins but I believe they cost extra. in future you should look for .mpg files... btw if you convert the .avi to a SVCD you can burn it on a normal CD its cheaper. ;)

I have downloaded from nimo, but not sure what to do with these codecs and when to use them? do they apply themselves automatically or do I have to insert them into wmp myself?
also u say i can copy them to vcd? that would be fine because all my dvd players have that compatibilty. is there a special process for this?
I really apreciate your help and time.
Thank you
Andy

Just install the pack your player will find them if needed!

Nero is able to do it. Under new/multisession you can choose SVCD and VCD. Nero will convert the files to the needed format, but as I said if you are out of luck you need some plug ins or an other converter.
