Mac user with no virus software

I'm just wondering if anyone here with a Mac downloads stuff here with no Virus software. Specifically png files. Is there any way to tell if a download is safe before opening it if I dont have virus software?

Personally I've never come across a mac virus over the net. But that's not to say they aren't out there b/c they are (moreso for pre-osx.) I do have an anti-virus app which I use to check files manually to be on the safe side. In over 10 yrs the only 2 mac viruses I've seen (& were old ones) were from fellow students.

I second that. They only virii I encountered were PC only. (I wiped the files clean and serve that to the net). Especially that email virus (you know, the ones that have "Hello" or "Hi" as subject and are labeled important). I really laughed at its face.
