Cannot play successful downloads on WMP 10?! Why?

Have Windows XP with DSL/Broadband. My concern is music only. Many songs download fine and then I can play or burn them using my WMP 10.

HOWEVER, many songs download on my LimeWire program just fine, AND will even play when using the 'LAUNCH' button.
YET.....when I open the file on my WMP 10, it downloads but will not open or let me play it. A "!" icon appears in yellow/orange color, and the error details tell me the 'codec' does not support the file. Or there is some combination of files and the WMP can't play because it does not have all the info??

Anyway, it seems curious that a successful download which will play on LimeWire, and which is listed as an Mp3, will not play and most importantly--burn--on my WMP 10, despite the fact that it does open and store the file.

Not a big deal, but there are certain songs where this always occurs, I'm trying to figure out the common denominator, if it is possible to burn them. Maybe this is a Windows issue but I thought someone might be able to shed some light on the situation.

Thanks.

Have a really thorough browse around these Tips & Tricks Forums where I have moved your post...

Search within Gnutella Forums for

codec or codecs

Gigabosozillions of posts on this amusing issue !

2 ----------

But to save you a lot of BS and stress...

Click on the

Nimo Codecs link in my sig below...

Download it as a SAVEd file... (You may want to re-install it...)

Install it VERY carefully...

Select ALL files and THEN remove the FOUR (4) files about which you are warned...
Then install ALL other Codecs.

After that you have a 99% chance that anything and everything will play on your machine...

If it does work for you and then later you notice that some files no longer will 'run'... Re-install Nimo Codecs because some other app got in there and changed your default codecs !

And - At risk of being considered outrageously pedantic - again ! - Do let us all recall that

CODEC only means COderDECoder

Regarding Ursula's reply and Nimo??

Hi Ursula and thanks very much for your reply!

Unfortunately I just don't get the whole Nimo thing. I'm a computer neophyte and feel like a dummy, but oh well.

There seem to be different duplicate versions of the same four Nimo programs, from basic to some scary Beta version that warns you not to use unless you are an expert, which I obviously am not.

I did in fact download those four versions and then installed three of them; but not the ominous fourth.

The music files will still not play on my WMP 10.

I'm positive I don't quite understand the Nimo site and/or your instructions.

I couldn't glean the four files you mentioned I would be warned about; or for that matter understand how to choose what and what not to install within each Nimo file.

Your instructions read simple and plain (although I don't get installing VERY carefully, as I thought one can only click 'install', is this a joke or serious?) but once at the Nimo site I got lost pretty fast.

Anyway, perhaps you can help, or I need to take a class. I'm sure most of this is not so complicated, but I just don't quite get how to do it properly. And also don't wish to do any damage to my computer. For now I have uninstalled the three Nimo programs from my control panel.

If you think you can help me further with this Nimo site, please do. If not, I understand you're busy and will learn as I go I guess.

Thanks for your time.

Peace,
Daniel

:) download an mp3 conversion program.

I convert the bad mp3 to an mp3. The new file runs on WMP10 fine.

I tried nimo and variouse codecs without sucess but this works for me.

MP3 conversion

i'm running ImTOO WMA but ive tried 2 or 3 others and they all work. They change all sorts of files to MP3 and clear up those annoying codec problems. The only small problem is that you loose the embeded artist and album details. But these can be put back under properties.
