Sorry about the flipping confusion- for a sec I didn't know where we were. Apologies for posting in stages over the past few days, but it's been busy.

Ok- recap. I went to the RM Converter site and it appears to convert RM files to everything else. What I am looking for is an avi viewer only. So I went to Hyplay and downloaded the program. Then I was unable to view the avi file and rm that was downloaded for the experiment. Just to be sure that I wasn't messing up, I downloaded another file- this time rm only since that never failed to play. Guess what... it wouldn't play the preview. Then I removed the program and everything is just fine. Go figure. On a personal note, going to the links and downloading them is kinda like a leap of faith... I was kind of worried I downloaded something sinister.

So... since previous avi files always popped up with WM, avi should in theory be available through a Windows site????

What do you mean with avaiable through a Windows site? Which site do you mean? The reason why your WMP open the avi is that WMP is the default player. If you want to choose an other player right click on the avi choose "open with", "choose program" now search for your player and choose - don´t forget to check the box.

The problem you are describing sounds to me like you need only the right codecs. Every player is able to play avis without any problems (including WMP). I would suggest you instead of trying several different players, just choose one which you like and install the codecs you need. I posted the links.
