just to let you know how I've got on!!!!!!!!
once downloaded, we were able to play thru vlc ! as suggested i got nero, which didn't really do the business until just messing around realised that the d/l i was trying to burn wasn't in a recognised format for dvd (has to convert .avi/xvid into vso/fob etc.. format) SO using the nero on one hand and another program on the other hand i was able to re-code the d/l and then burn it thru onto a dvd.

so just to say thanks for all the prompts and help along the way!!
