Downloading programs

Hello there,

Can someone plz help?? My B/F has decided he wants the old Atari console game of *edited*(pest  )
Anyway I put space invaders in search and what I got was some Zip files which I didn't want to download cos it said they had executable files which may contain a virus. Instead I downloaded 2 things at random (1-F2 and 2-A5, they didn't have names just this). When I looked in my shared files folder it said:- 1-F2 AVG update 8kb (the other the same but 2-A5).
When I tried to open them it said -: you are attempting to open a file of type AVG update (BIN)...blah blah blah etc etc.

Why is this happening plz??

Thanks a lot, Lindy x

:)

That's the way to go if you want to play old arcade games (ah, the memories) on your PC.
Just dld the thing and dld a ROM and you're good to go (or, rather, your B/F is).
If he really likes old games like that, I think he'll have enough to satisfy his hunger for quite some time.

PS: I edited out the name of the game out of precaution. I think it's still copyrighted.

Hi there,

Thanks for that. I appreciate the time you've taken to reply.

I've been getting the mag Easy PC and one of the CDs is.... (wait a mo and I'll take a looksee) ....yeh here it is, it's a C.D ROM emulator and now I've looked at it properly I don't thinks it's the right thing . It says,
Quote:

Store and play you audio CDs CD-ROMs from your computer hard-disk drive
Oh well I'll have a look at the link you included in your post.

Hee Hee bet you never guessed how daft I am with computers.
Thanks again, Lindy x :)

A CD-ROM emulator will do almost the same thing as Mame, except that it will do it for CDs.
Allow me to explain: Say you have a game on CD-ROM that requires you to insert the CD-ROM every time you want to play. What the program the mag offered does is emulate the CD-ROM. In other words, it stores the data of the CD-ROM on your comp and then tricks the comp into thinking that the CD-ROM is already inserted.
Neat?
It depends.
As for Mame, what it does is it emulates old consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainement System (or SNES ;) ) and old arcades. You then have to find ROMs on the net to play games, so to play the game your B/F wants, you first have to dld Mame then find and dld the ROM.

supbondid: You can't launch programs via LW. You'd need to open them outside of LW. Go to the LW downld folder & open from there.

be verry carful when downloading game roms ,they are normaley onley a couple of killobytes. moast virruses are the same size of game roms so its very easy to get the two confused. i recomend downloading the roms in packs of like 20, 50 ,300 or however many .and scan everything u DL with a good antivirrus scanner.
