AVI? I have tried everything...

So I have downloaded every codec possible, taken everyones advice and spent hours trying to play an AVI file. I think maybe I dont know how to down load these files. Do I need to do anything in order to get these codec to work or do they play on their own? The lastest message I received from my wmp10 was "the specific module could not be found." Does this mean anything to anyone? I need help please. :(

THanks for replying. I have tried everything, I have downloaded as many AVI file as I could and couldnt get any of them to play. Do I need to do anything extra with my codec after it is downloaded or should my media player just pick it up? I will try to play with my Privacy status. Thanks.

hi
i have been watching movies and clips from the internet for about a year now and i still dont understand anything about codecs. but ever since i downloaded video lan player (its free) i have never NEVER had an annoying error come up that says it cant be played.

Codex's DO need to be installed
all i have to date is DivX which is free which has a user friendly installation to allow ur current default player to use the DivX codex and installs the DivX player if u want to try it (this codex seems to be VERY common and solved most of my media problems)
also as others have indicated there are other (free) players which include most (if not all) codex
LOTR's post (i gave link earlier) includes link to a couple of those players
also Ursula's sig includes links to players and codex look here
sry but i have MANY such projects ongoing and cannot be much more help on this one subject currently

Hey alaanqaa and Kathw, Video lan worked perfectly. I spent two whole days downloading every codec I was told too. So thank you very much for your concern. Take care. Victor :)
