computer pissin me off....again

problem#1: for some reason i cant play dvds on WMP ,it keeps telling me it needs a decoder and iv installed at least 4 dvd decoders with no result . dvds played fine on my other computer on WMP, why cant i get it to work???!

problem#2: my drive letters seem to be ****** up , for some reson my boot/system drive is "D" and my xtra storage partition on the same physical drive is "C". this is causing some programs to not install/work corectley and it alsow just bothers the hell out of me (kind of like a crooked picture on your wall or a squeeky floorbored).

problem# 3: it keeps crashing for no aperant reson(i think i might have fixed the problem with the firewall that might have been causing this but better safe than sorry) . it just crashes and re-starts and then sez "windows has recoverd from a serious error ...blah blah blah...please send error report to microsoft"ect.

help grateley aprecieated, computer is : p4 3.4 ghz, 1gb ram, xp pro sp1, 120gb drive partitioned into 70gb boot and a 50gb storage . and a second 300gb drive, 550w PSU

Sorry, but ultra-short time now as I gotta go to airport...

Someone will reply with more details... Video prob is probably CODECS... Have a look around here in Tips & Tricks Forum...

Hey !!!

Main reason I replied so fast was to simply say how sorry I am that your other big problem is that someone gave you the middle name of RAY !!!

:p

I mean, 'Tube' is enough of a cross to bear, huh ?

Dear CRT

It seems that your PC is so messed up they you are going to have to rebuild it from scratch. I guess that anything you try will just create another problem, so I think you are stuck.

Save what data you can onto floppies or CDs then FDISK your HDs, making sure that your "C" is your boot drive, reformat, reload drivers and software then, finally, reload your data.

Good Luck

as BBBBBBoBBBByBBBBBoy has mentioned....

Sounds like it could be a basic 'house-keeping' problem...

I mean, do you have any virtual drives... assuming that is the case ??????????????

Sounds like and 'expert-specialist-friend' has attacked your machine !!!

Save ALL important PERSONAL stuff...

Then, FORMAT your C:\ HDD with ONE and ONLY ONE partition... (unless you're really smart and you'll also try Linux !)

You haven't exactly blinded us with details re: your computer, so we have to do a lot of guess work which is basically a wank for you and us, huh ???

Hit us with details !!!

AND...... Keep your Program/Application stuff on your C: Drive.... put the files and folders that are personal, i.e. music, video, text.... geddit ?... on your 'auxiliary drives...

It's a performance thing more than anything else...

Come back for more help, right ?

Your first problem is that your O/S is XP. I think it sucks, but that's just my opinion. Second, is your computer a Gateway or a Dell?

cathodraytube May 31st, 2005 06:20 PM

the computer is a home built one. the motherboard is an asus p4c800-e deluxe and the processor is a p4 3.4 ghz. i think i figured it out , i forgot to install the chipset drivers....now that there installed it runs much smoother. the drive letters were fixed by a re-formatt and a re-installed OS. the dvd problem is fixed by the codecs i installed. yes xp dose have its pros and cons but it works satisfactory for me. if it gives me too much crap il install linux or win 2k .

ok it hasent ever FROZE agen sence the chipset driver install ,but it still keeps crashing from time to time , it seems to be doing it onley when im on the internet. also my internet connection seems to "degrade" or "die" over time ...like its still connected at 48kbps but in the task manager's networking chart its onley using no more than 12% of the BW after its been connected more than an hour or 2. whats going on?? are the 2 problems connected to eachother??? could it be bad modem drivers??

its one of the EL CHEEPO modems...i onley payed 8$ for it , could this be the problem?

Dear CRT

As your PC is home made it is unlikely that anyone can offer any real help other than suggestions, and that is the problem with home built PCs if they go wrong you have no one to turn to for help.

I would suggest that you go back to the motherboard's makers and ask what peripherals they recommend should be used with their product. Failing that, talk to people you bought your motherboard from, I am sure that they also build PCs to order and, as they are likely to have the experience, may know which bits will work well with your particular motherboard.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to put in a lot of time, effort and probably money (buying new peripherals) to put your PC right, as I said in my first post, as soon as you solve one problem another will pop up.

I originally home-built my first pentium PC but two years later, when it started to go wrong, I got so frustrated with the time, effort and money I had to spend to keep it going that I vowed "never again". The "savings" I had originally made with home building just evaporated.

When it eventually died, I went down to PC World and bought a new computer. Therefore, if the new PC goes wrong then PC World will have the hassle of putting right.
