codecs

got a problem.
when I download movies and try to play them with media player, I get a pop-up saying it can't play the movie because it does not have the right codec. I don't know what a codec is or how to find out which one I need or how to get it. can someone help me please? thanks

Codecs

Do a search on FFDSHOW and download the lastest version of it. This should help you!

I had the same problem until I downloaded and installed cucusoft's free avi player. That allows me to play almost all movie files and also seemed to fix the codec problem with windows media player.

Visit cucusoft - the free player is at the bottom of the home page.

Hope that helps!

Jenni.

WMP will play just about any file if you have the right codecs. CODEC stands for COmpressor-DECompressor, a codec is what tells the player how to play the file, and are small files that are installed on your system. they come in packs that have many of them in one installer. do a search for "nimo codec pack" in limewire or which-ever p2p you use (you can allsow get them from the web if you like to do it that way) . download the file and SCAN IT FOR VIRUSES JUST IN CASE. the file should be about 8.49MB. there are a coulple other good ones too like the "XP codec pack" and "WM9 codecs" .

if you want to watch dvds or vob files on your computer you need a special dvd codec, it took me a while to find one that works but all systems are differant so youl proboblay have to hunt for a working one too. windvd worked for me. all the othor codecs are free but moast of the dvd codecs you have to pay for. but you can get them free if you SEARCH ...hint hint;)

No, codec means enCOder-DECoder. Compression is a subclass of encoding and not all codecs really compress data.

Didn't have it in me tonight to correct that one.
Sure did stumble over it to with a wince or two...!!!

same differance IHNA......and all the audio/video formatts i know of do use compression of some sort , exsept WAV and AIFF audio.

and i think there is some raw video formatt too used by movie editors that has no compression and consumes somthing like 200gb for 1 hr of video . but everything els uses compression of some sort.
