Question Advice re software which converts AVI and other formats to ensure quality DVD movies

I have Windows XP (Home Ed), w/Windows Media; Musicmatch; Real Player, and God only knows what else is in there. I can't seem to get the hang of Windows Media, but everything else is okay. I have two drives, 16xDVD-ROM & 16xDVD+/-RW and some-thing called 'Power DVD Software Decoding for DVD Drives" which I've never used, and, because I told the salesperson when I bought the PC that I wanted to hook up a synthesizer keyboard, she said I needed an additional sound card or something called Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, PCI w/Dolby Digital EX, IEEE1394, 7.1 channel, THX cert, which I checked out for the first time last night, and, to me, it appears to be yet one more media device. I've been successfully failing at downloading since I bought my computer until I found LimeWire a couple days ago, and I'm happy to say I downloaded my first movie last night. I noticed that most of the movies had "avi" in the search description, and not being cyberfluent, I had to look it up on the Internet to see what it meant. I read that the avi format could affect the quality of a video/movie when writing to a DVD, and some computers may require software to solve the problem. I was able to watch the movie on LimeWire's media player before burning a DVD, and the contrast was a little light, and the audio cut in and out for a few seconds at a time during the first 25 minutes and then it was okay. It might have been static if that sounds right. Because of those things, I didn't burn the DVD and thought I'd look into the type of software I might need.
Anyway, I hope this is enough info to have fulfilled the terms & conditions of the Forum, and for someone to advise me if I will need to get software to convert various formats before I begin recording movies to DVDS I read about a program called Blaze Media Pro that sounded like it covered just about everything, but being a Newbie, I decided to ask for help from the experts. So, if anyone can recommend a program that 's fast, efficient and, more importantly, 'anticerebral' please post a response or send me an e-mail.
