Video format

Hi all,
I don't know if this is possible but if i d/load say an avi file would it be possible to change it to mpg as some of them seem to be smaller than avi ormp4 files????

thanks lammar1

I've found that .avi's tend to be smaller in filesize. If you want to convert a video or movie to a different format then you'll have to buy a video converter. You can download a trial version but it won't convert all of the movie/video.

There is a few freebies about.

Generally an AVI file will be smaller than a mpeg2 file, but may be larger than an Mpeg1 file (coz the mpeg 1 file is lower quality for the same size video) Traditionally most movie files you will come across will be around 700mb, a carry over from the DVD to CD storage days. For an AVI to approach DVD quality, it is normally about twice that size, so is rarely seen.

There are few converters around, one free one I use a lot is DivXtoDVD, because it handles the NTSC to PAL conversion quite well for me.

I them use VobTOMpg (also free) to convert the resulting DVD back to Mpeg2 format so I can then trim the black bars off top and bottom (for some reason the majority of people whom post videos dont like wide screen!:D ). I do that with any of several software packages, I generally use either TMPGenc or WInAVIvideoconverter, both of which you should pay for. (Note both of these can convert directly, but I like to do it the way I do as WInAVIvideoconverter is often jumpy when converting NTSC to PAL, and TMPGenc takes four times longer)

http://www.videohelp.com/
or
http://www.doom9.org/

will tell you everything you need to know about video conversions, and have the software you need. (on Videohelp click "tools" on the top bar to see the software, then pick out of the redish menu the type of software, make sure it is listed as freeware)

If you join either of their forums, dont mention piracy or anything to do with it, they are in denial about what they are doing, and will ban you.

DivXtoDVD is the way to go then - Looks like they have decided to ask for money these days, so here is a link to the last freeware version. of DivXtoDVD. It will take your DivX file and create a vobset for burning to DVD. It will work fine, but will not have a menu, it will just start playing when you insert into the DVD player.

What Version Nero do you have ?

If you have the new version 7, and haven't updated for a while then it is time to update.

You can set priority on Nero to low. Then it Shouldn't interfere too much with downloading, but it's a good idea to use Nero during idle time to convert
