Why would you not want to share your downloads?

Some people don't want the risk. Simple as that.

If it wasn't for servents sharing the downloads folder by default, P2P worms
wouldn't even exist and RIAA lawsuits would only affect the genuinely guilty.

yes. But can you explain why before we explain how?

What type of connection are you using? What is your offical upload / Downld speed?

Given the context of the question it is reasonable to conclude that steff
doesn't want to share files involuntarily, which is definitely a legitimate concern.

Lets not forget that many ISPs are stingy with bandwidth, and have been
seen penalizing their own customers or charging extra fees. There are also
places in this world where involuntary sharing can result in involuntary and
unpleasant legal consequences. In Canada it is legal to download almost
anything and burn it onto a disk but we still respect copyright when it comes to
sharing of files. There are many reasons to avoid involuntary sharing.

Let's not start giving people the third degree just because they ask for advice
on this topic. Users are supposed to have control over their sharing, and
we should be falling over each other to help them with that.

The original question was "is it possible.....?" My original reply was "yes".

No third degree from my side ... but if people want to freeload, I have no time for them, if they have genuine concerns about legality bandwith use and cost, security or being in control of their share they will get all the advise and help they need. Hense my reply "why"

[Limewires advise not to "share the entire contents of your hard drive" is about the least helpful bit of advise in the user guide imo btw]

Welcome the freeloaders. They are tomorrow's sharers once they build up a
collection. The "freeloader percentage" went down from 35% to less than
12% in the few years gnutella has existed.

Let's not forget that the biggest draw in gnutella is that it was designed from
the ground up to be a sharing network instead of a trading market.
The emphasis is on freedom to share instead of on upload/download
ratios or greater access for "elite" people who "earn" privilege. Every time
people made such suggestions to the developers they were always ignored or
turned down flat.

Gnutella is designed to be friendly and inviting to new users with nothing to
share or those who cannot due to various (and valid) reasons. This
friendliness has paid off because a clear majority of these "freeloaders" have
found something to share all by themselves without being forced to do so.

Having "no time for them" goes completely against our intentions in having a
free and open sharing network like gnutella in the first place. Having
both time and files for them is what we intended all along.

Freedom to share means having the freedom to control what and how
much we share, and even freedom not to share if we so choose. Let's
respect each others' freedoms and choices here.

Anyway, back on topic…

You can find the controls you need in the Library, steff.
http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._library.shtml
Just right-click on your "Saved Files" folder and select "Stop Sharing Folder".
You can do this for individual files too. After that, you can add and share any
folders you want. It's all under your control.

A freeloader according to the dictionary is " someone who takes advantage of the generosity of others" Nothing is said about giving back in the long or short term, but along with the word leech it is used usually (thought the latter not in Bittorrent circles) as a term of abuse. We can beat the word around looking for different meanings, and I freely admit to possibly not understanding the word correctly. My meaning was as a taker with no intention of giving back. Aaaron and Foolofthehill have a different idea of the word (I would rather use the term "non sharers"), and given what they understand by it I agree entirely with Aarons post.
