VLC doesn't burn DVDs;)
If you use the search (top right, next to quick links) to look for burn to DVD or similar, you'll find lots of threads which will give you lots of peoples' opinions on different software etc.

:)

If you have a drive that burns disks, check the software CDs that came with it.
If you don't have such a drive, why even ask about it? ;]

thanks for the insight but i am not a complete ****with!!the software that comes with the computer doesnt have the capalbility to burn the particular type of file!!!!so thanks once again for your help

Particular type? So, I guess you need additional software to convert it.
If your burner software is Nero there are upgrades available,
otherwise you can get all the info you need at videohelp.com

Don't be so defensive. You asked for free software, and that can mean what
you have already. Some of the free stuff you get with a burner does work. :p

Look for the topics on "DVD Authoring" at videohelp.
That's where you can find info on free tools and how to use them.

got divxx and used it to burn the movie but now my dvd player wont play is this due to the fact that it is in avi format.I burnt it to a cd-r disc is this wrong!?Is there anything I can do to change it ?(not the dvd player )are there particular formats that are neccessary...........Oh how the frustration grows!!!!!!!!!!! P.S.sorry about the rule breakage must remember to read things before agreeing to them!

AaronWalkhouse April 11th, 2006 03:40 PM

If you use CD-R disks, then you will need to convert the file to the MPEG-1
format and then burn the disk in the VCD or SVCD format. This may mean you
will have to split the movie in half too, as it is usually too large for one disk.

Look up the tutorials on authoring VCD disks on videohelp.com.

Peerless April 11th, 2006 04:53 PM

actually, SVCD is MPEG2...

and yes pooh74, .avi files will not play on most all DVD players, unless you have one capable of playing divx files, which do exist...you will also need to check what your DVD player does play, as many do NOT play SVCD files, only VCD (which is of much lower resolution)

as for DVD format, you will need to convert to said format before you burn..as Aaron has tried to suggest, check out http://www.videohelp.com/ , that is where I learned a hell of a lot about video files and how to deal with them

AaronWalkhouse April 12th, 2006 11:51 AM

Sometimes there's more than one audio track in a file.
They are called "streams" in some software. Same thing.

what do i do to select it and how do i know which audiostream the film is using ?

AaronWalkhouse April 13th, 2006 09:25 PM

Each program is different. Sometimes you use the menus at the top, sometimes
you right-click on the video screen, then you follow your nose to the audio
tracks or settings. See if the built-in help pages make sense.

DVD Authoring software

As you posted above you require free burning sofware. Well personally I find NERO Premium the best and the latest version is downloadable free as a trial version at the Official NERO website. NERO 7 Premium. there are many codec packages ect. around may I suggest ACE MEGA codec's pack availible from limewire as it has all of them almost. Hope this helps you. P.S. the Trial version lasts 60 days then you need a product key. Sure you can find one somewhere;)

I think Platinum is a good one. Try to save money for it. It's good. I used to use it until my dvd burner broke. I miss it. It used to burn cds too. :( :( :(
