codec help

Okay. If I get a message stating that I don't have the proper codec, does this mean I am trying to play a video file?

I have certain audio files that will not play. I am using the latest Windows Media Player. As far as I can tell it has all the current updates.

I have tried using the forum, and following the links. What I seem to be ending up with is video codec items. I have downloaded Sherlock,Gspot 221, and afreecodecvt2. Either I am using them incorrectly, or they are not solving my problem. Personally I think it's my lack of knowledge.

Should I try different media players? Is there a way to determine which codec(s) are missing? Have I improperly understood the directions?

I have managed to find help here before. I am hoping to find help once again. I am not downloading anything that is a video. Although I do understand sometime an audio file, may use video coding. I think.

Once again any help will be greatly appreciated.

try Gom Player..

there are numbers of media player(freeware) with its own in-built codec system like VLC, MPlayer, and Gom Player..

Gom is a new media player that i've found at Softpedia.. and I strongly recommend it to you :)

you can find it at http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multime...m-Player.shtml

it playbacks most of the differently encoded video formats and it's much faster than VLC... so give it a try.. if you have any questions about Gom you can post it here.. i come visit Gnutella Forums everyday.. :)

@oh and one of the best things about Gom is that it has a "codec finder" system.. for codecs that cannot be distributed legally, it shows you where you can download the proper codec by popping up the "open source" codec website..

I reckon using the VLC player. It is the most recommended player here in the forums (most likely used by almost all Mods.).
